How I Met New Year

First question: In short, I decided to set up LMDE: D on my discretion: D began confidently and with enthusiasm (as in Windows) to remove unnecessary default applications to me (audio-graphic-text applications). After some time, I noticed that the desktop lost the former look. Released menus. Something stopped running. As it turned out, together with remote applications (video-audio-audio-office graphics), I once died some dependencies. I decided to reboot, but I could not get into the system. When entering a password, some error popped out. I do not remember what. As a result, I could not get into the system. And now what to do with a snapshot TimeShift is also not clear. I had to re-roll the entire system from scratch. Everything seemed to be working fine, but new items appeared in Grub Menu. If before the loader menu looked like this:

LMDE 4 Debbie.
Advanced parameters for LMDE 4 Debbie
Windows 10 (on / Dev / SDA1)

then then additional points appearedMemory test :

LMDE 4 Debbie.
Advanced parameters for LMDE 4 Debbie
Memory test
Memory test
Windows 10 (on / Dev / SDA1)

Customizing the system, I again called somewhere and had to put the system for the third time (I feel that not last: lol :) And then the bootloader began to look like this:

LMDE 4 Debbie.
Advanced parameters for LMDE 4 Debbie
Windows 10 (on / Dev / SDA1)
Windows 10 (on / Dev / SDA2)

That is, this time the Memory Test disappeared, but in addition to Windows 10 (on / dev /sda1 ) A new item Windows 10 appeared (on / dev / sda2 ). When I go through Windows 10 (on / dev / sda1), I see in Windows conductor two disk C: and D:. But when I go through Windows 10 (on / dev / sda2), then the third disk E: (reserved by the system) appears in the explorer. It sees the bootloader folders and so much.

Tell me, please, how to remove the item - Windows 10 from the bootloader now (on / dev / sda2)? If not hard, I would still explain from where he took there. And why after each installation a different loader menu appears?

Second question: In general, Million has accumulated over these days. And do not all find answers. At least such an example: if necessary, I need to sometimes throw in the folders of other accounts accounts any files (documents, audio-video, etc.) on one popular resource read to copy the file to another account (Marina) to the folder "Documents", then to me (admin) you need to get access rights. I am writing in the terminal:

$ sudo chown -r admin / home / marina /

All files without problems are copied from the ADMIN account to the Marina account. But now, when I complete the Admin session, I can't enter the Marina record. Click the mouse on the name of the account and nothing happens. In that article, nothing was written about it. And Google did not suggest anything on this topic. Then I went back as Admin and returned access rights:

$ sudo chown -r marina / home / marina /

Finally completed the Admin session and, finally, was able to log in to the Marina record. It should be so? Each time a $ sudo chown -r command, you need to return access rights to this way? Or are there other proper ways to copy files to other accounts?

Every day I like Linux Mint: blush:

Maybe who knows where to place the filepolicies.json. In Linux Mint Debian Edition 4, to earn group policies?

Dear colleagues: D, responding to your question, I inform: in Linux Mint Debian Edition 4 (Debbie), the POLICIES Group Policy Settings file must be placed on the path / OPT / Firefox / Distribution. Folder / Distribution / you need to create yourself. Using this file, for example, you can prohibit / enable all Linux accounts and Firefox profiles to update the browser, access to the About: Config page, using the Pocket service, telemetry, displaying the recommended extensions and themes on the corresponding page, Firefox synchronization, search services, cleaning Cache when leaving and so on. Read more here -Group Policies Firefox. All this makes sense, if a laptop uses several users or you yourself for everyday zascha, sit under the user, and not under the admin. And then many parameters for each Linux account or Firefox profile do not need to configure every time again, it is enough to put the POLICIES.JSON file to the desired directory before the first start of the browser: happy:

* GeraSats,
Hurray, the problem has decided! It turns out that due to the fact that I appointed a change of languages on the usual Ctrl + Shift with Windows usual, so I didn't want to work quickly allocate with the words Ctrl + Shift + arrow (right-left). (Music tracks are simply happy, thanks: girl_triniti :)

but SHIFT + arrows works, even without setting up hot keys

You did not quite understand me. I meant the selection with words, not letters. If simply shift + arrows, it will be highlighted, and if it were in Windows Ctrl + Shift + arrows, then it is not barking, but in just a word. That's exactly what you need to configure.

And the update manager showed you that you can update the driver in the system, but in no case they will not put them for you, do not confuse: derisive:
Sorry, if not correctly expressed. I just wanted to give distinction between Debbie and Ulyana :)

In general, Linux never offers a particular installation, do not want to do not put it, this is a purely personal business)))

That makes me: good:

Are you found? So that the MINT strongly recommended to put any drivers?

Why do I come up with? The Linux Mint Ulyana20 update manager proposed different options for installing drivers on the NVIDIA video card. Opposite one of them was the signature "propumeinary, better performance." LMDE did not offer to put pressure drivers at all. Then it was subtracted that this is a Debian policy in general to distance themselves from the propetary software, unlike Ubuntu.

Black1980 @ 29.12.20, 16:58*
Something you have experienced definitely, it is even talking about something, but you have to see a mistake! How much the minint and mate and cinamon put, there have never been any mistakes!

Sorry, I do not understand the system error logs. But it did not work, and put DEBBIE 4. And there are no errors here.

Nowhere
It is a pity: (With a single file Policies.json, it would be possible to assign many default settings for all account recordings and browser profiles.

Why not take a look at MS Edge for Linux
Thanks for the link. There was no program manager. On Windows 10, I was sitting in MS EDGE for the last six months. Excellent browser. It even seemed that the chrome and firefox was easier and fired. Again, many familiar extensions are available. I will definitely try later, while I'll figure it out a little more with Firefox in Linux Mint. As it turns out, some things are configured here.

Behemoth_01 @ 29.12.20, 16:23*
Igor sinks.

Well, yes, unfortunately, there are no many games for gamers.

Tell me, please, how to configure the keyboard in the Linux Mint so that the cursor can allocate the whole words with CTRL + SHIFT + arrows (right-left)? On windows it is default. Running in the Linux Mint keypad settings, I tried to add a custom combination, but nothing came out. Does not want a keyboard take such a combination.

LMDE 4 64 BIT Top Put, specifying the mount point in the installer

Yesterday, I moved to LM Debbie4 without any problems: as you advised, rolled it over LM Ulyana20, re-smearing the mount points and format system and home sections. The system has successfully launched. To be honest, for me after a terribly braked Windows 10 special difference in performance between Linux douristuits No: D Linux just flies! Everywhere! But for itself certain advantages still found. For example, I liked that the default Firefox 78esr is installed in LM DebBie4. And in LM Ulyana20, the default was Firefox84. For the day of use there is no failure. And in the LM Ulyana20 system issued long natch about some failures in the "System Reports" section. But as far as I understand, it is probably not saying about anything. Maybe LM Debbie 4 just ignores errors. Then LM Ulyana20 strongly recommended to put propterary drivers for the video card, etc. Of course, I as an ordinary winecodium, I do not understand a lot of things in the work of these two distributions, their difference. I describe only completely explicit differences.

It turns out that Linux Mint developers insist that users set distributions on Ubuntu. Mall, LMDE on Debian is just a backup option, in case the Ubuntu project is ever rolled. But the users so came to LMDE, that many only them and use: D

Black1980 @ 28.12.20, 19:27*
Got me brake Firefox

By the way, about Firefox. In Windows along the way C: \ Program Files \ Mozilla Firefox \ I created a folder \ Distribution \ where the Policies.json file was placed. So I disconnected checking and installing updates, and changed something else for all Windows accounts, which is very convenient. But in LMDE 4, according to Mozilla instructions, I put the POLICIES.JSON file on the next way: User / .mozilla / Firefox. It did not give any result. The Firefox update check is also available and, for example, the Pocket service was not disconnected. I know how to disable everything, for example, in user.js, but I am interested in Firefox group policies.

Then, according to the second manual, Mozilla put the POLICIES.JSON file on the next way: / etc / firefox / policy. But this also did not give any results. Maybe who knows where to place the POLICIES.JSON file correctly in Linux Mint Debian Edition 4, to earn group policies?

And so in general, I like Linux Mint more and more. I repeat once again: everything you need for an ordinary user of Windows here already have: happy:

* Asokay Thank you! Just for some reason I write that the ScreenFetch command was not found. How to stop the execution of the Top command? Arrived, that via Ctrl + C. Then I go out through the EXIT command, but it writes that there are stopped tasks and does not close the terminal window. That is, you need not just stop the execution of the Top command, but also complete the execution? Re-entering Exit already closes the terminal window.

Rep: (49)
* regska4,
I will tell you about your first impressions from Linux Mint. Until yesterday, like all the housewives, I was captured by a common myth that Linux is for any hackers from the films about spies. And so that with the usual Windows go to Linux you need for many years in the afternoon and at night hard to study the Stopitot of the programming languages, remember to remember millions of console teams, throw the main work, score to your personal life (relatives, friends, girlfriends) and eat only peaks with cola. Oddly enough, in 2020 such horrorists are still in the go. But now I am writing this comment in Linux Mint and feel comfortable. At the same time, no programming language I do not know, from the commands while I can only withdraw the weather in the terminal:
$ CURL WTR.IN.
The main work did not throw, with a personal life and so it was like everyone else - Khrenovo, did not move on the oppression, but sometimes I buy in a hunt. In short, the sky did not fall to the ground. All you need to housewife to housewives in Linux Mint already exist. This is a familiar user interface in everything: desktop, start button on the bottom panel, conductor, office programs, text editors, browsers, postal clients, players, games like all sorts of solitaires, graphic programs, desktop messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber, etc. d.) And so on. Not to mention the fact that in Linux Mint, in contrast to Windows, more wide opportunities for customization (fine configuration of the working environment and programs). But I do not have it yet. The most important thing is that not a young laptop (10 years old) on Linux Mint feels much better. If the download lasts in Windows 10 long, the cooler is buzzing, then in Linux Mint it happens easier and faster. For example, if immediately after downloading Windows, you right-click on the desktop or run the browser, then the entire system is shifting for a minute. This is because Windows continues to load a million all sorts of services, antiviruses and so on. In Linux Mint, after downloading the system, you can immediately work, not kalece your nervous cells. If you do not need special programs that are only on Windows, you definitely need to go to Linux Mint. If possible, you can leave Windows the second system. Just in case.

The only thing I regret that I did not switch to Linux even earlier. In short, they will now boldly recommend Linux Mint to all housewife teapots. Moreover, free.

SERGA @ 26.12.20, 18:02*
At the old machine, the Mint LMDE is better to put :) Yes, and on the new :) glitches less, faster, morestarly.

And if you put the Mint LMDE 32-bit instead of 64-bit, it will also affect the better performance for an old laptop? And the main question: how to remove now MINT 20 Ulyana (64-bit)? Or can I put next to Mint LMDE (32-bit)? I still have a free unimpressed section on the disk. How best?

Today the whole day was the "kettle" war with the installation of Linux Mint. As advised, deleted the section D, pre-hitting the accumulated good by 300GB at different angles. Created using the RUFUS bootable Live CD flash drive, rebooted the laptop, called Boot-Menu, chose a flash drive from the list, a green Linux Mint logo appeared, the heart joyfully stuck in anticipation ... and on this screensaver with the logo for about 20 minutes everything hung it all. Strange, in YouTube, this was not warned by O.O, the laptop did not react anything. Forcibly cut it off. Repeated the process two more times - the result of zero. I tried the same with another flash drive. The result is zero. All flash drives workers. The integrity of the image checked. In Google, as usual, information is contradictory. Or the one who faced such a problem by creating a topic, suddenly the next comment "Thank you, the question decided!" disappears in the dark abyss of some kind of forum, and not explaining anything. Then I decided to download via CD drive. Began to burn a new DVD disk, after two or three seconds, the laptop spat the DVD with the words: "You have too high speed for recording." It was a DVD X16. Strange, before I wrote without problems on such discs. The mood completely fell. I thought that these are the signs of fate. On the machine went and duck to the pushed DVD X4. But it was recorded "Mushroom Father". This disc is 10 years old, probably. Fortunately it was a DVD RW. The stirring "of a shaft father (two parts) and recorded the image of Linux Mint. After rebooting, the laptop picked up DVD (BIOS pre-put it first) and the installation of Linux began. The heart joyfully stood in anticipation.

As a result, from the remote section D, as advised, with the help of Gparted made an extended section where the Linux-SWAP swap section was created, the EXT4 system partition, the Home section. Did not create a BOOT section. Finally, Linux Mint has been established, asked to reboot, remove the installation flash drives and press ENTER. I joyfully pressed ENTER. With a satisfied smile, I reached out to smash the fool's back and ... the laptop again hung O. For about 10 minutes, I looked at Stream some rocket on the smartphone. Loudly said the name of the genital from five letters loud and went smoking. Once again. Upon returning, the laptop, everything was also dependent asking for Press ENTER. Forcibly cut down the laptop and launched. The GRUB boot menu appeared to my surprise and joy. Chose Linux Mint and still I do not believe my happiness: Dancer: An old laptop came to life! The tired cooler is more likely not twist, like on 10 Windows. Especially on YouTube or some Facebook. And most importantly - I am not a stupid winemate now! : Clap:

While I get acquainted with Linux Mint, I had such a question: is it normal that I see all Windows from under Linux? In Linux conductor, I see the / SD2 carrier (C C). I calmly open the Users, Program Files folders and other Windows folders, except for Windows folder. I went to "My Documents" Windows, copied from there a couple of text files and then opened a text editor in Linux. But at the same time, from under Windows there are no Windows folder Linux.

Is it possible to close access to your folders in Windows? To do not have access to them from under Linux.

Thanks again for help and support!

On the MBR you can create an extended section
I wanted to clarify: in any case, this "Advanced section" will have to create, pre-pressing the existing section "Disk D"?

Rep: (49)
Decided to laptop withWindows 10 Version 20H2 Put the second OS - Linux mint . In the laptop one hard disk, on it 4 sections: System, C drive C, Disk D, Recovery. Around that the 5th section on the hard disk for Linux mint Create will not work due to the fact that the style of the section MBR limited to the creation of 4 partitions.

That is, now I need to combine disk D with a disk C to get 3 partitions instead of 4, then squeeze the disk C and only after this create a new 4th section under Linux Mint? Or I did not understand something correctly. Thanks in advance for support!
