Being a fork of K9, the application is more pleasant and more convenient in terms of some interface elements.

This is not yet tasted. First of all, I checked whether encryption will work without encryption software installed on the system. Works. K9 alone does not know how.
Also announced the ability to import keys from other mailers. I have not tried it myself. However, if this thing doesn’t want to work for some reason, get that encryption can only be exchanged with users of the same application. And about the export of keys did not see.
On 4.4.2 crash on startup ...

And a little more is declared ... 4.3+. Perhaps a single case? ..

How to check?

Sent an encrypted email. I looked what came. And there is a suggestion, how to make it easier?

And how to use this mailer correctly, send a letter, and the program itself encrypts?

ps With the encryption of letters to the end did not figure it out. There, before sending a letter, you first need to pass the key, the keys are different ...

In this program, too, need to pass the key?

Does someone have problems with notifications? The sabzh and K9 stand parallel to, K9 notifications come clearly, sabzh sometimes arrive at the same time, then they stop, then they come again, then again the whole day is silence. The settings are identical, exported from K9 and imported into PEP. Work in the background and do not save charge allowed. Does someone have a similar experience?

Pretty buggy fork K-9 and has not been updated for a long time. The original is more stable if someone does not like K-9, but well, you need encryption is the closest analogue of FairMail. The truth is still in test mode, but it is stably updated.

* navinc,There is no Material design in K-9, and I haven’t seen fresh forks with it. But the subject is buggy, really. Recently we added Librem Mail, but it is not there either.

The most sane fork of K-9 mail in my opinion is Bird Mail. The last time is often updated, but it has two versions: regular and Pro (without ads).

For applications with closed code, there can be no trust, especially when it comes to encryption, etc. of things. Even more, all the software from the Play Store is potentially unsafe. :-)

If you need both a material design and open source, then now only FairMail. Although the open code is rather conditionally safer, since users themselves will not see the holes in the code. Often, applications are rarely updated and, accordingly, rarely fix bugs, which in itself is also unsafe.

For applications with closed code, there can be no trust, especially when it comes to encryption, etc. of things.

And you, of course, have the capacity to test it?
Or does the “community” only do what it examines for vulnerabilities?
Android is exactly the system where the “code closure” largely loses its shortcomings, because you can control permissions, activations, services, receivers, content providers, and even system calls. And just the developer FairMail has done a lot for this with its other developments, and in fact is a living legend in the Android world.
This is not a FairMail advertisement, since even on the contrary, I believe that investing in K-9 development would be much more correct.
As for encryption, encryption (for example, in the form of PGP) can be used on top of virtually any application.

* okomand,You can often find a similar opinion. As if the lack of an audit of a free program is the reason for using its proprietary counterpart. But it is not, because the very existence of the ability to check the code is an advantage, not a disadvantage. And more likely, the malicious functions will be in software with closed code, which in practice is usually the case. In any case, any checks will not give 100% guarantees, so choose the lesser of the evils.

It is equally important that an open project can be forked and sawed out of it all the unwanted functionality (in case of its detection).
Android is exactly the system where the “code closure” largely loses its shortcomings, because you can control permissions, activations, services, receivers, content providers, and even system calls.

This is good, but it takes a lot of time and effort, and if a potentially dangerous application needs access to the network, it brings little sense by itself (if not, then even less). Well, directly network activity allows you to control firewalls, which on GNU / Linux and BSD-systems are many times better than the limited and buggy AfWall +. Not to mention the fact that on these systems there is simply no such amount of software that would be necessary to limit, whereas on Android (and Windows: lol :) even a calculator can send telemetry (or something worse, just keep an eye on everything) and there are less open and free alternatives for it.

Why takes a lot of time? Look at how many of these malicious “activations, services, receivers, content providers” are found in popular proprietary applications, and compare them with free counterparts from F-Droid - if they are there, they are several times smaller. Usually, the list of permissions required for the work of proprietary rights is much higher, i.e. without XPrivacy in any way. And the whole thing must somehow be supported. After all, after the update, new malicious services may appear in the application, etc. Applications using Google services may not work with microG or stop as it was recently with Discord.

By the way, this fork is still not completely abandoned. Recently version 1.0.216-dev has been released:https: //pep-security.l…/tree/feature/material
I really did not try to collect.

After all, the very existence of the opportunity to check the code is an advantage, not a disadvantage

And did someone say something different about this?
Only you keep in mind that even those executable files that come with the source code can be created on the basis of other code.
And you did not answer my questions)
xdimquax @ 06/03/2019, 21:23*
so choose the lesser of the evils.

What is the "lesser evil" - a question open to each model of threats.
xdimquax @ 06/03/2019, 21:23*
This is good, but it takes a lot of time and effort.

This is not “good,” but “excellent,” and the question of “time and energy” is a question of priorities and the threat model.
xdimquax @ 06/03/2019, 21:23*
Not to mention the fact that on these systems there is simply no such amount of software that would be the need to limit

Not yet...
Plus, the stories still pop up, and it's not a fact that such software for Linux is not getting bigger, because everything rests solely on trust, which is not worth a penny in today's world ...
xdimquax @ 06/03/2019, 21:23*
and compare with the free counterparts from the F-Droid

And compare that all applications from F-Droid have the same signature, and now it is enough to somehow penetrate the F-Droid kitchen to attack millions of users ...
But we are too far away from the original topic, it will probably be better if we continue, then in the friendly topic of security.

* okomand, those. do you think there are such threat models when proprietary software from GP is preferable to free software from F-Droid?
