The Disgaea series was launched in 2003 on PS2 from Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. In the aftermath, the games of the series went on PS Vita, Nintendo DS, and Playstation.

Game process
The gameplay revolves around a hub where the player can hire characters, prepare for battle, heal and get things.
A player can start a fight using a special level or card selection interface. After stripping the cards, the characters get experience, things and HL (game currency).
The game is much more complicated than what is described above - you can pump almost everything that is in this game: your characters, their abilities, their class and even the things they use. There is a meta world, called "item world", where you enter your weapon to pump it and collect even better equipment.
You can also perform a "restart" of the character after reaching the level of 9999. At the same time, you can transfer some of your characteristics to level 1, thanks to which the character's strength grows exponentially.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, but if you like the gameplay to be deep you will love Disgaea.

Setting
Usually events happen in one of Netherworld (something like hell). There are several Netherworlds in the Disgaea universe that are managed by overlords. The plot usually focuses on one of them or their children.

Why are penguins everywhere?
Prinnies are overlord servants. People who were bastards in their lives turn into Prinnies after death to redeem their affairs by slavery.

Why you might like the game:

• Depth of gameplay
  
• Great animation
  
• Wonderful character, sound and level design
  
• A lot of gameplay hours and replayability that just don't bother

Why you might not like the game:

• Excessive amount of anime stamps (Wi-Fi, series, crazy characters, grotesque abilities). In fact, NIS makes fun of the anime stamps in Disgaea, but many may not like it.
  
• A lot of talk. Even considering that the dialogues can be skipped, there are still a lot of them. Before the fight, after, when you are at the base, etc.
