Platform descriptions

Symbian OS[sɪmbɪən əʊˈɛs] is an operating system for smartphones and communicators, developed by the Symbian consortium, founded in June 1998 by companies:Psion, Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola. Later the companies joined the consortium:Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Samsung, Sony, Sharp and Sanyo.

Symbian OS is the successor to the operating systemEPOC32developed by companyPsionfor their pocket computers. In 1998-2000 a significant part of the system was rewritten in order to optimize the code to work on devices with limited resources. The developers managed to achieve significant memory savings, improved code caching and, as a result, program acceleration, with lower power consumption requirements.
Starting with the version of the 9.x system, a serious protection mechanism appeared - differentiation of the API in accordance with the application rights (capabilities). Primary Application Development Language -C ++ , there is support Java . There are also libraries PIPS for porting applications from other OS.

In 2005 came outSymbian OS Series 60 3rd Edition, based on the new EKA2 core, which led to a violation of backward compatibility with programs written for previous versions.
At the moment, the most common (by the number of devices) version isSymbian OS Series 60 3rd Editionand5th Edition (Symbian ^ 1).

There are several modifications of the system:
• UIQwas the main smartphone for Sony Ericsson and Motorola. A distinctive feature of the UIQ is support for touch screen devices. Since November 2006, owned by Sony Ericsson. In late 2008, development of the UIQ platform was discontinued.
• Series 60- This is the main platform for Nokia smartphones, also licensed by Samsung, Siemens and LG. Designed for devices with a telephone keyboard (with a reduced set of buttons).
• Series 80- The platform, also developed by Nokia, for devices with full-sized keyboards (currently, the development of this branch of Symbian OS is suspended due to the improvement of the Series 60 for devices of this type).
• FOMA(Freedom of Mobile Access). Distributed in Japan. It is promoted by the largest mobile operator NTT DoCoMo, on the request of which the devices at FOMA are manufactured by Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Sony Ericsson and Sharp.
In addition, there are several stand-alone devices that use non-standard modifications of Symbian OS. These include the Nokia 7700, Nokia 7710 (Series 90) and SGH L870 smartphones.

File system (mini FAQ)

File systemSymbian OSjust like MS-DOS or Windows is organized with the help of disks and folders. But unlike them, the disk name has a decisive meaning, indicating where the data of each disk is stored and whether it is available for modification.
Drive classification
Disk C: is a phone memory (analogue of a hard disk in a computer). Here are the settings files of standard smartphone programs, contact data, notes, standard melodies, themes, etc. Also here are several system folders with which the smartphone OS interacts. These are the "System" and "Nokia" folders. When working with them, it should be borne in mind that erroneous deletion of information in them may lead to disruption of the smartphone's operating system, after which it may be possible to reinstall it, for which you may even need to contact the service center. Additional software can be installed on this disk, as well as on a memory card, but since its size is much smaller than that available on the memory card, I would advise putting here only those programs that would take up little space and which you would like to use regardless of memory cards.
Disk D: is a system. It is an analogue of the RAM and the Temp folder in the computer. Deleting something manually on this disk can cause the phone to “hang” and the loss of unsaved data. So if you want to free up space in the phone’s memory, it’s better to use special programs for this.
Drive E: represents information on the memory card (if it does not exist, then the memory card is not inserted). The folder structure on the E drive: after installing the programs and saving the data on it, it becomes similar to the folder structure on the C drive: This structure should not be changed manually, since in this case the smartphone programs will lose access to the data on the card. More information about the standard OS folder will be explained below.
Drive Z: - a special disk containing the OS files of the smartphone and all its standard programs (similar to the Windows folder of the computer). Fortunately, unlike the Windows folder, the files on the Z drive are not available for editing, deletion under some conditions, you can only view and copy them. If you perform a full formatting of the smartphone, then only files on the Z: drive will remain on it.

Attention!!! These files are responsible for:
1 - call log
2 - the message log, but which ones it did not understand. Explained in detail:
These files have only numbers in their composition:
1  100
2  10
3  40
4  100
Because I do not really speak English only the meaning of the first, namely:
100 - the size of the call log, that is, when the list of calls exceeds 100, the log will start deleting the oldest one, replacing them with new ones, that is, there will never be more than 100 entries in the log. BUT! You can edit these files manually using a text editor, thereby reducing or increasing the max. The size of the magazine.

When installing an SIS application or a theme on my device, the last one scolds about the error (s) in the certificates, informs that "Installing the application is not supported" or "File is corrupted". What should I do?
Answer
The following options are possible:
1) You install programs (themes) not for Symbian 9.1 OS.
2) In the Application Manager, you must make the following settings: Application Manager ->Functions ->Settings ->Prog. is tired - All, Certificate Verification - Disable
If, for all this, the device still swears about certificates - for example, it says that the certificate has expired - try to rearrange the date on the phone half a year ago.
If the problem with the certificates you still could not be solved, you will have to sign your application, as well as create a new certificate.

Why is there no System folder on the memory card, which was a system folder on the Symbian 8.1 OS versions?
Answer
On devices with Symbian 9.1 and above, this folder is missing, and there is a slightly different file system than the one we are used to in earlier versions. The file structure of the hidden folders of the memory card at the moment looks like this:
С: \ private \ 10000850 - operator's logo in * .mbm format;

Hidden and system folders / files are visible only when open full access to system resources
Note: You can see the Private folder on the memory card without full access:
1. With a PC through a card reader;
2. Via PC Suite in data transfer mode (do not forget to enable the display of hidden folders).

Why can not I install the theme or Java-application, which previously stood on my machine?
Answer
The report on installed Java applications and themes remains on the phone even after the removal of this application or theme, and it can only be deleted by the full format of the device. Otherwise, when you reinstall these applications or themes (including a new memory card), the device usually reports that "Installation is not possible."
What needs to be done to make it possible to reinstall deleted themes?
First of all, you need to open full access to the file system. apparatus.
If the themes are not re-installed, clean the tails here:
C: \ sys \ install \ sisregistry \ a00000eb - delete the entire folder;
C: \ sys \ uninstall \ a00000eb_000 .... there will be several such folders with the same name (depending on the number of installed themes), we delete them all;
E: \ sys \ install \ sisregistry \ a00000eb - delete the entire folder;
E: \ sys \ uninstall \ a00000eb_000 .... again, there will be several such folders with the same name, and delete them all.
And it is necessary after cleaning we delete the file C: \ sys \ install \ sisregistry \ backup.lst, when opening the application manager it will be created again.

Answer
First of all, you need to open full access to the file system. apparatus - read in this section.
We clean tails from java applications:

X: \ Private \ 10003a3f \ import \ apps \ nonNative \ Resource \ ... delete the contents (registration in the menu, icons);
X: \ Private \ 102033e6 \ ... the Java applications themselves, delete;
X: \ Private \ 10203636 \ ... delete the contents;
X: \ System \ Install \ Registry \ ... uninstallers, delete.
If a Java application was installed on a memory card, the records will be only on the card, installed in the memory of the phone, the records will be only in the memory of the phone.

How to remove themes from the phone if they are not visible in the Application Manager?+
Answer
All installed software on devices with Symbian 9.1 is removed in three ways:
1) Via Application Manager
2) Directly from the folder E: \ Private \ 10207114 \ import through the PC Suite in data transfer mode or through a card reader (only if the object to be deleted is installed on the memory card)
3) Using reset or hard-reset device
If the application or theme is not visible in the Application Manager, you should try to restart the device several times before the desired object appears in the Manager. Otherwise, use methods 2 and / or 3.

How to change / remove operator logo?+
Answer
Setting a normal (static) image as a logo:
- First, we will need full access to system resources;
- Using the program MBM Tool we convert our image (future logo) to the .bmb format;
- Rename the resulting logo in "Logo _ ***** _ OTA.mbm", where ***** is the operator code (see below).
For example: if your operator is BeeLine, the entry will look like "Logo_250_99_OTA.mbm".
- We throw the resulting logo in the folder C: / private / 10000850.
- Reboot the smartphone.
Codes:
Russian operator codes:
250_99 = BeeLine;
250_07 = BM Telecom;
250_99 = CJSC VimpelCom-Region;
250_10 = Don Telecom;
250_17 = Ermak RMS;
250_28 = Extel;
250_12 = FECS-900;
250_13 = Kuban-GSM;
250_02 = Megafon GSM;
250_1 = MTS.
The codes of the girls are as follows:
255_01 - UMC, CIM-CIM, Gins;
255_02 - Wellcome, Welton, Privatmobile, Moby;
255_03 - Kiyevstamp, DJ, Acya Bacja;
255_05 - Gold, Uni;
