If so, I’m on my own as well.
As for me, the device is a cut above all other gamepads. I was not ready to pay $ 60 for the PS4 controller and 60 + 12 for the receiver from Juan, so the choice fell on the UK. Maybe I somehow misunderstand the essence, but for me, CK is a regular plug-in and play. Settings are everyone’s business. If you don’t want to fool around with them, we set the default config in the form of the xinput layout and do not think about mapping at all. And if you don’t do this, then before the first entry into the game in the press choose “gamepad with high-precision axes” and everything, just forget about the setting. What people cry, I can’t understand.
Of the benefits:
+ A clear plus in the cumulative work of the trackpad and gyroscope. This is really a new level.
+ Full rebind of all that you can think of
+ Excellent ergonomics for big hands
+ Space autonomy even from simple batteries
Of the minuses:
- Just a defective overlay that really needs to be cut, and the sooner the better
- IMHO is not a funny nipple, convex not very comfortable
- Sometimes podsbivaet drift on gyro
Bottom line: I took the device for 35 on Amazon + 10 for delivery. For our money we get the level of controller elites from Juan, and a new level of gaming in everything from arcades to jesters. Yes, not everything is smooth, but it doesn’t. Someone screams about nerves, not convenience and stuff, all this is great, but this gamepad is a device that you definitely need to get used to, this is stated if not on every post, then in every review for sure. If a person bought it in the hope of PnP and ultra-compatibility with everything from a complector to a vibrator, then ..... excuse me, you need to read reviews and watch reviews.
I AM FOR
I have already written several reviews, one in this thread, and a couple on other sites. I will write again, the last probably.
TL, DR: Steam Controller is not "replacing the xbox controller as the main controller" and in no way is the replacement of the mouse and keyboard, forget about it, in order to perform the functions of the xbox controller there is an xbox controller, a dual box and more less successful clones. The Steam Controller is Valve’s attempt (developers of Half-Life, Steam and a bunch of other things) to make a device that is convenient to hold in your hands while sitting on a sofa / lying on a bed, but it will not limit the user's ability to play all released games on Steam.
Now more.
Steam Controller (hereinafter SK) actually consists of two parts. Parts of the hardware (the piece of hardware itself, or rather plastics), and parts of the software (the configuration utility of Steam).
Valve’s ideas were grandiose - to make a device that would be convenient to hold in your hands, but at the same time you could give any type of input to the computer (analog sticks, analog hall sensors, classic buttons, touch panels and a gyroscope were available), and it was done it would be convenient and not distracting from the game, as well as make a software layer (the same Steam configurator), with the help of which it would be possible to interpret these all possible types of input into the input methods that are understandable for all games in Steam.
Implement these ideas from Valve succeeded. Only there is a nuance (every time the word “nuance” is pronounced, that vulgar anecdote is remembered, and strangely enough it perfectly reflects the situation with SC) - everything works well and without problems only with games purchased on Steam, and only if this game , bought in the incentive, does not work through the third overlay, like some kind of yupley, and only if the user at least understands well what he is doing.
As always, when it comes to large-scale and limitless ideas, things that they cannot control stand in the way of the bank, namely:
1) Games that are either not in the incentive, or they work through third-party launchers.
2) Other programs installed on the user's computer that will inject their own overlay on top of the application.
3) The unwillingness and / or inability of the end user to draw conclusions based on what they read, or read altogether. (When roughly speaking on the controller under the lid, batteries and arrows are literally drawn, indicating that by pressing the buttons, the batteries are removed, but users do not pay attention to this and are surprised when they press the buttons, and it turns out it works like that - it’s just banal an example of the fact that if you open your eyes and fold 2 + 2, you can see a lot of things.)
To this we can add the fact that the implementation of large-scale ideas led to the fact that users who are accustomed to plug & play and who bought IC without knowing what this thing is and how it works, experienced a cultural shock from the configuration utility (someone from her very presence, and someone from the requirement to move his hands to make it work).
Hardware part
I did not fail. Materials, despite the fact that they look cheap, are of high quality. The controller is very durable, after a year and a half of using it personally, it still looks like new to me, no scratches, even touchpads have not been wiped out, although it is possible that the low-medium controller usage intensity (4-5 hours per week) played a role. The only significant hardware drawback that most noted was the lack of a dongle compartment on the device itself (since the protocol is proprietary, if you lose the dongle, you will have to buy the original from the official distributors). The controller’s marriage as such is an isolated case, most often if there are problems, they are associated with the software part, or a drift of a gyroscope or false input to touch pads - all this is treated by calibration.
Users who are accustomed to the ergonomics of classic controllers may find it difficult to get used to the ergonomics of the SC. In particular, they often complain about the small and sometimes inconveniently located ABXY buttons. Also, sometimes accustomed to classic controllers may experience frustration from the shape of the controller’s grips (for the Xbox controller, for example, from the bottom of the grips to the buttons, the bias goes towards the player, and in the SK this bias goes back), but it disappears with time, after intensive use, because this was done intentionally due to the fact that the touch panels need to be influenced with your fingertips, and not with your whole finger, as would be the case with the classic form of grips.
The software part.
Heavily dependent on the user and the specific case. In "laboratory conditions", when the user's computer meets the minimum requirements of the game and no third-party software is installed on it, 99% of games purchased in Steam will work with the standard configuration utility and without any additional settings. With publicly available instructions (how to start origin games, duplicate games, third-party games, etc.) that google in 10 seconds, 95% of games not only purchased in Steam, but in general will work. If you use third-party utilities that allow you to add non-win-32 applications to Steam, 100% of the games will work.
Unfortunately, "laboratory conditions" is practically unnatural, and therefore, before buying, the user must ask himself: "am I ready to google the solution to the problem and follow the instructions in 5-10 points if necessary?". If the user did not ask this question, but still bought the IC, there is a high probability that in a couple of months he will run to the forums to scribble negative reviews.
After one and a half years of use, my opinion was:
- the gamepad allows you to do and play everything that you can imagine, you can play shooters with a mouse, you can drive with it like with a wheel in your hands, you can fly with it like a joystick in your hands, only this can not be compared with full gaming devices that are sharpened by this case. The mouse is faster, the steering wheel is fixed in one place and works more authentic, the joystick is also fixed and the degree of deviation from the vertical axis is better felt on it.
- the left touch panel seems useless to me. Compared to the classic 4 or 8-position D-pad, which is pushed into any other controller, the left touch panel adds functionality, but deprives of accuracy in tactile sensations in platformers like mitboi.
- To use some of the "features" of the controller, such as touch pads and a gyroscope, you need to practice this. Unaccustomed to this pain.
+ huge customization options. Using Mode Shift, the value of the buttons can be changed on the fly, and with the help of activators, you can increase the number of possible functions on one controller configuration in fact and almost to infinity. Even Armagh does not have as many binds as you can hang on SC
+ Unlike classic gamepads, SC does not require support from the game for themselves. For example, without third-party programs from the Xbox-pad, you will not be able to play some Fallout 1-2, Baldur's gate (you will not understand that you want it until you try, I rediscovered the isometric RPGs thanks to the SC), Devil May Cry 3, MGS2 and other classics. With the help of the SC it is done without problems, and even conveniently done.
+ In the shooter touchpad and gyroscope trite more convenient stick. I would never have thought of any girs of a thief or maxspain playing with a gamepad.
+ Not in the games SC can be used as a computer control panel, or as a hotkey block. Few people use it this way, but in general it will not be difficult to replace the keyboard with a stempad for working, for example, in Photoshop.
+ keeps charging for a long time. It is necessary to think at the expense of their proprietary dongle, they communicate not with full-fledged protocols with a bluetooth PC, but with cut-down ones transmitting the minimum amount of information and, accordingly, spend minimal energy on communication.
Do not take SC as a replacement for the keyboard and mouse in online shooters or in general in shooters, if you play at the table. You won’t achieve identical control accuracy at all, especially if you play the keyboard really well (I can go into details, but it will take another 2-3 messages with the amount of text in this message, or even more). You should not take SK as a replacement for an Xbox-type gamepad, firstly because the root principles of design are very different (the Xbox controller “absorbed” the evolution of gamepads from the gamepad, demolishing the N64 with a gamepad, and ending with the pad of the original Xbox, whereas SC was developed from scratch, by developers who set themselves the goal of making the most universal device to support everything that is possible), and secondly by the end-user experience, classic gamepads are Plug & play, and to play on the SK you need to apply some kind of effort and I.
I will add my story and mini reviewer.
Because I have scoliosis, I always have to play SC.
I had to throw the clave and the mouse (in games) - and it saddened me, and I realized that I needed to take the SC.
I had already heard about him, and I knew that they were smearing him everywhere. But I had almost no choice, I was not going to throw PC gaming. I also did not intend to play all the games on a regular gamepad, since wretched thing.
So I see a discount in the store Buka, dropped somewhere 4800, along with delivery.
Having received it after some time, I was fucked with joy. At last, I am holding SC, I thought.
All right, I started testing the SC. And after seeing all these settings in Big pikcha, I was also fucked up, but not with joy anymore)
Like everyone else, at the beginning there were thoughts to sell it nafig, but I did not give up and continued to understand it. After a week of use, he began to please me. And then every time more and more.
Pros:
- Gyro, it's just something. I use it for accurate aiming. It's over to get used to it, but then it will replace the mouse, well, almost)
- The trackpad, you need to say here, for sure aiming it certainly is not suitable, but it is much better than the usual stick (or whatever it is called, correct me). I use it for review, it is very convenient to inspect everything. I adjust it more sensitively than a gyroscope.
- SC is great in the hands, who would have thought, but it is more convenient than the Joy Xbox One.
- The settings in Big Pikch, at first it all seems like a minus, but if you figure everything out, you begin to understand that SC has a lot of opportunities. (For example: with the usual press one action, with the clamping of the same button is another)
- Batteries last for a long time, about a month. I personally bought rechargeable batteries, and charge them one by one. There is also the ability to play on the cable naturally.
Minuses:
- Already very long Valve updates it, a lot of shoals of all kinds. (For example, in saving settings that seem to fix, but generate new jambs)
- Some features are clearly not finalized. Sometimes for complete freedom of settings, some point is missing.
BEHIND !
since such a booze has gone, then my objective and subjective assessment:
pros
- Undoubtedly in the first place the function of the mouse + device in the form of a trackpad, trackball and mouse acceleration in the settings =>in the coupe everything gives absolute superiority over other gamepads
- Bigpikchi settings, in which there is a weak point, which can easily become a minus (or were originally), BUT in fact and my wildest fantasies, this is a plus (5 times)
- Power consumption, the batteries last for so long until indecently that I began to buy them instead of charging the batteries, for it is stupidly too lazy to charge.
- Left, right grabs (they are petals)
- Ergonomics of the SC, I’m used to, it’s very convenient to hold (like a glove) and press on the grip (to be fair, I’ll take it to the minuses, because I basically don’t play with the Xbox dvuyays, it's inconvenient and everything was here .. it was)
- Vibration, let's just say so non-standard, setting its level not only adds (decreases) its power, but also makes the reaction to some actions different. 8-bit is fun.
- My dream is a screenshot (purely from myself)
- Computer control, I can turn it on, I can turn it off, I can do everything.
- Design, I like the logo stim. In order not to say, but it is branded vesch (and the divine, again purely from myself)
- I did not use the cord, since it is there, a symbolic plus.
minuses
- As promised, ergonomics, more precisely, the main buttons and the left trackpad, too wide girth for me. Grab save. Well, you get used to it of course.
- General settings, in principle, because of what srach and worth it. But a large ship, a great navigation (and demand). Let's wait.
- Finding fault, it is inconvenient for me to remove the batteries, it seems to crush him. Although originally invented.
- not yet, and in general for the stalker is ready to forgive everything
