Types of firmware
Asuswrt- official (or stock) firmware from ASUS. Take in advance and version for older, in case of rollback.

Asuswrt-merlin- Project by Eric Sovazho (RMerlin). The goal of the project is to fix the jambs of the factory firmware, a number of small tweaks and a very limited addition of new functionality. The firmware will always be kept as close as possible to the factory one and will never become overgrown with a mountain of new features. Due to the fact that Merlin is in contact with ASUS, some of his fixes sometimes become part of the factory firmware.

Merlin fork- This is a branch from asuswrt-merlin two years ago. John Bacho's goal is to keep the last version of the firmware afloat with “loud” Wi-Fi drivers. Let me remind you that starting with .376, ASUS, at the request of the FCC, limited the power of the Wi-Fi transmitter to legislative norms and blocked the possibility of changing the region. From the new firmware, John takes only security fixes.

Hugo gomes firmware- another branch from asuwrt-merlin. Hugo Gomez also set himself the task of bypassing regional locks, but he still refused to open his code, allegedly closed his project under pressure from public criticism, but in reality leads further. In addition, Hugo updated the minidlna, dnsmasq, dropbear and other (about 80) firmware components of the firmware to the latest versions in the firmware. At the time of publication of the article, Hugo did hide his repository :(

Tomato firmwareorTomatoUSB- TomatoUSB collects Michal Rupental (aka Shibby) - a system administrator from Poland.

DD-WRT- free alternative firmware for a number of wireless routers, mainly consumer class, based on BroadCom / Atheros / Xscale / PowerPC chips.

Problem solved!
I started with the settings of the network card, got to the cable - changed the cable - the speed became 1 Gbit / s.
Connection drops have stopped.
The reason was cable.

Good evening everyone! Tomorrow I expect the new ASUS RT-AC66U router, while I work on my old RT-N16 firmware from Merlin. In order not to break wood from the very beginning, I want to ask a few questions:
1) Are the nuances and firmware process of the RT-AC66U similar to RT-N16? If there are nuances, please explain.
2) Should I immediately switch from native firmware to Merlin? What do you think is the most stable version of the firmware from Merlin?
3) Who has already installed the latest firmware from Merlin RT-AC66U_380.64_2.trx? Should I put it? What are the opinions?
4) If not Merlin, then who do you think makes the firmware better for ASUS RT-AC66U? Which version in this case, you can pay attention?

Have you ordered a b1 revision?

Honestly, I don't know which one will come. Ordered in the CSN, there is not written in the catalog what revision, just the model "ASUS RT-AC66U". And what, b1 is bad? Or is it the other way around? Explain pliz, what is the difference revisions?

* fleash2000,
As far as I understood, if he were b1, but this would be reflected in the title itself, i.e. ASUS "RT-AC66U B1. Apparently, I go easy.
I see that they added USB 3.0 x 1, the second one was USB 2.0 x 1. Well, the price, probably for a new revision will be higher.
I looked at Merlin, for this revision there are no firmware.

* Orward,Merlin doesn’t have it because b1 revision for hardware is the last RT-AC68, and he didn’t want to complain about using the wrong firmware, not where it should be.

Clearly, firmware from RT-AC68. Just what is the point of releasing what is already on the other brand ... If the iron is the same. According to the characteristics, they are almost identical, except for the fact that RT-AC68 cannot seem to be “lying”, but only fixation in an upright position.

The 2.4 GHz network is constantly falling off, the latest official firmware. Am I the only one so lucky? Does the firmware do not officially solve these problems or is it a problem with the hardware? Tell me please.

With the latest firmware from Merlin380.64.2The speed has increased to 350 Mbit / s (at the rate), a coincidence can of course, but even the "native" latest firmware cut the speed by half.
