Rep: (258)
Kobo Glo Firmware (Android 2.3.4)
Discussion пїЅ | Description

Kobo glo
- e-book from the Japanese company Rakuten, Inc.

Dualbut is available - the ability to use both Android and native OS!

Kobo glois a lightweight, equipped with a Wi-Fi module, an e-book with an impressive Pearl HD screen, made using E-ink technology with a resolution increased to 1024 by 758 points, a front-lit ComfortLight and a touch interface implemented using infrared technology. There is also an additional slot for a memory card.

Differences between standard firmware and firmware on Android OS
Native firmware:
pros

- integration with Pocket and Kobo services
- good battery life
- support cover with magnet
- works smartly

Minuses
- supports a limited number of formats
- you need to create an account on Kobo to use (you can get around)
- trimmed browser, can not be downloaded (solved by patch)
- there is no Russified menu
- no Russian keyboard (solved by patch)
- poor support for Russian-language sites (solved by patches and font delivery)
- complex collection creation

Android:
pros
- the market is available and almost all applications in it (readers, browsers)
- better work with books and documents
- transparent work with files

Minuses
- there is no support for a case with a magnet (when it will be unknown)
- you can not turn off the backlight completely
- green LED flashes (solved by script)
- the battery sits faster
- does not work as fast as the native OS, sometimes there is not enough RAM 256 (reboot, return to the desktop)
- version Android 2.3.4
- OTG does not work (when it will be unknown)
- only the new build without GAPPS works fine

What you need to install OS Android
0. Straight arms
1. Kobo Glo with any firmware
2. micro SD card for installing Android OS
It is advisable to use a memory card of 4GB or more. In fact, Android OS takes up no more than 1GB, the rest of the space is used as internal storage.
An example of filling the space on a 8GB map

3. Tool for opening the reader, suitable mediatori or plastic card.
4. Computer and card reader

Dualboot on Kobo Glo
Well, there are volunteers to check how the android works via dual block on Glo and Touch?

You need a computer with Linux.

First of all, you need to backup the original card.
dd if = / dev / sd<Sdcard>of =. / kobo-orig-firmware.img

<Sdcard>- the letter under which the card reader appears.

Card images with Android (those provided by MarekGibek on a mobile)
For Kobo Touch:https: //www.dropbox.co…_Android_Kobo_Touch.7z
For Kobo Glo:https: //www.dropbox.co…23_Android_Kobo_Glo.7z

Unpack the archive and create the card with the command:
dd of = / dev / sd<Sdcard>if =. / 2013-11-23_Android_Kobo_Glo.img

<Sdcard>- the letter under which the card reader appears.
(for Touch-a there is another image name)

How to write the card out of its card reader and re-insert.
Here is the archive with the files that need to be replaced on the card in the "Android System" sectionhttps: //www.dropbox.co...droid%20System.tar.bz2

Well, the patch for the device:https: //www.dropbox.co…-android-glo-touch.zip
Put the original card in the internal slot reader. (I really hope that we did not miss the point above about creating backup. If you missed, go back and create.) Connect via USB, unpack the dualboot-android-glo-touch.zip archive into the .kobo folder on the reader, then go to "Safely Disconnect Devices" Disconnect the reader, disconnect from the computer, wait for the reader to restart. After you report the result, if there are problems we will continue to understand.

Xposed Framework and AllAppsPlayStore Patch

What is it? In terms of why it is useful?

Rep: (17)
Greetings, colleagues.
Is there news on android firmware?
I also waited for my reader, trying to download the MarekGibek image, but Dropbox says that his account has been temporarily disabled for too much traffic.
Who is not difficult - perezaleyte2013-11-23_Android_Kobo_Glo.7z , for example, on a Yandex disk.

For example, on a Yandex disk.

No problem:http://yadi.sk/d/TqT5Nj2iGaBwe

Hello to all!
TornadoX, When to wait for the firmware from you? would you answer? And then I want to sew, maybe I'll wait for your ...

Rep: (17)
Thanks to the helpAtomic_Mutant , appreciated the current version of Android firmware for our Kobo. So far, unfortunately, the role of the main OSI does not pull because of damp. All hope for enthusiasts.
Dreams ...
My commercialism regarding Android on Kobo is related to reading RSS feeds, which I use on mobile devices since the days of WinMobile.Sat down, however, on the convenience of technology (clicked "update", went to make coffee, came back and read fresh interesting articles).
Accordingly, in Kobo "for read" is missing only this. All the rest (Coolreader, Pocket) works great.
So I thought, what if smart people make it possible to download news via RSS / Feedly on Linux, living in Kobo out of the box, and we thank them.
Wrote to the author of the ported CoolReader proposal, interested -join in.

Rep: (77)
Well, here it is just that each one calculates where the ratio of usability / glitch is more profitable.
For me now, with all my real dampness, a cobroid was more convenient. Although of course on the road I will put back my own flash drive :)

Sorry for the wait, a little sick. And in the reading room while I put my own card with the OS, the android is very important = (
All you need to do is to remove your data (logins and passwords) from the reader room and I can already upload to the exchanger.

Rep: (77)
While I put my own card with OS

"It's sad to see another tired player throwing cards" :)
Okay, I will hope for mobile readers - they seem to be still full of enthusiasm, although they post images of 32 GB each ...

Get well, we will wait for the fruits of your experiments :)

Rep: (77)
To start the screen blanking script, it's probably easier to use something likeScriptRunner. Especially if you have a different file manager.

Found another build with MobilereadKoboDroidIf anyone has the opportunity, you can try and possibly rebuild into a smaller volume - as I understand it, the author used a 32 GB card, and basically scored it with his favorite applications.

Atomic_Mutant
give link where found?

they seem to be still full of enthusiasm

I, too, just now it is not up to the reading room, it's already been idle for a couple of weeks.

Rep: (77)
TornadoX,
I found a direct link in some kind of blog or review with a mention on mobile, I will try to find the topic itself there.

Here it looks like it:http: //www.mobileread...=2731665&postcount=249

Disable the flashing "Power" LED
#! / system / bin / sh
ioctl -d / dev / ntx_io 127 0

As in the case of turning off the screen, create a file with the .sh extension and use any script startup manager. I use ScriptRunner.

1) Tell me, please, will multitouch work if I install normal android instead of native firmware?
2) And how easy is it to use programs like Perfect Viewer (image / comic / manga viewer)? Or specify a more appropriate program.

Rep: (77)
will multitouch work

I have an Android from Marek, it does not work - although it may simply not use the applications that support it

how easy it is to use picture / comic / manga viewer programs

As uncomfortable as any other small screen. But this is specifically a subjective opinion :)

Rep: (17)
ruSauron , Atomic_Mutant as far as I understand ours Kobo do not support multitouch hardware.
HaveGloinfrared touchscreen. This technology supports touch almost any objects, but not friendly with simultaneous multiple touches.

Rep: (77)
Well, the Nook STR seems to be the same sensor, and as I understood when I was the owner, there is an opportunity to make a multitouch, at least two tweaks, but somehow it is rectal. It seems that in Opera it is possible to control the increase and decrease of the page, but this is definitely not a Russian-language assembly.

It is also possible that something like this can be done here, but you need to dig from the server and the mobile reader, then as you rightly noticedTornadoX, Cobroid community is a small community of owners so far.

Guys help in this matter, after updating the firmware on Kobo Glo to 2.6.1, the book launched the update, and then the reboot ... and to this moment it hung o.O I am not an expert in these matters, but did everything according to the instructions. Is it possible to "cure" or can I bury? How to skate back? Thank you in advance.

TimothyAB, To get started, try pressing the reset button with the unfolded clip into the hole to the left of the USB.

Rep: (0)
I tried this option, does not respond ... I also tried to reset the Hard Reset (hold down the power button while the backlight button was pressed), everything is in vain, although with the Hard Reset LED indicator works, but the screen is not updated. I heard that you can manually reflash the internal SD card, but I doubt it. Maybe there are some other options?
