What is SSD-drive.

SSD is a solid state drive. That is, a storage device based on semiconductor elements. SSD drives consist of a controller and memory chips, while the drive does not contain moving parts, which is by the way one of the important advantages over HDD. There are two types of SSD drives - this is an SSD drive using flash memory and RAM memory.
In short, SSDs using RAM memory are the fastest and most expensive drives.

Varieties of SSD-drives.

Solid state drives are external and internal, of various form factors and designed for different purposes. There are fundamental differences in work / computer requirements.

Internal SSD
Internal drives are designed for installation in the case of the system unit or laptop. The form factor is usually 2.5 ”, but comes in a size of 1.8” for ultra-compact laptops, as well as even rarer 3.5 ”, whose dimensions are due to the use of a large number of chips and advanced controllers.
Attached Image
PCI-E SSD
Some performance devices have the format of expansion cards and are installed directly into the slots of the motherboard, like controllers, video cards, and the like. Such SSDs may require additional drivers at the stage of installing operating systems on them, and, in general, are more “capricious” in their work, although their speed characteristics often exceed those on standard solid-state storage media.
Attached Image
SSD Mini PCI-E
Modern laptops with a diagonal of less than 16 ”rarely have the opportunity to install two storage systems at once, and capacious SSDs are expensive, therefore mini PCI Express devices are sometimes used. These solid-state drives are no different from others, but they are designed to be installed in the corresponding slot of the laptop motherboard. Thus, it is possible to achieve and fast operation of the system placed on the SSD and use a regular hard disk as a large information keeper.
Attached Image
SSD External
You can also find external SSD, designed to connect via interfaces USB 2.0 USB 3.0, eSATA, and others. Among them, truly efficient models are rarely encountered, however, when using a fast data transfer interface, they will run faster than external hard disk models.

What are the benefits of SSD.

A solid-state drive has no moving parts, the less likely it is to break, which cannot be said of the hard disk. And thanks to this, the system unit works silently. SSD is more resistant to mechanical damage, it is practically not sensitive to electromagnetic fields and it has a wider range of operating temperatures. This type of drive requires less energy, which is why portable computers work with them much longer from the battery. Also, small size and weight make it even more convenient and make it possible to use them in the same portable devices. The speed of the solid-state drive is several times higher than the speed of the hard drive, the time of reading files, regardless of its location, remains the lowest. Therefore, the "cold" start of Windows is several times higher than the start on the HDD in time.

But SSD has its drawbacks, so it did not eclipse the usual hard drive. One of the main disadvantages of a solid-state drive is a limited number of rewriting cycles. The second, important minus is incompatibility with old versions of Windows. The problem is that Windows OS works with SSD, as well as with conventional hard drives. That is why, if you have an SSD on your laptop or netbook, then you need to either disable file operations that are designed for hard drives, or install Windows 7/8 / 8.1 OC: it is optimized specifically for solid-state drives. Another disadvantage is the high price of a solid-state drive. The price for 1GB SSD is a lot higher than the price for one gigabyte HDD. As well as the price for SSD grows in direct proportion to the volume, and the price of a regular hard drive grows more slowly, since it does not depend on the volume, but on the number of plates.

What is SLC, MLC, TLC.

These are three different types of NAND memory, the main technological difference between them is the number of bits stored in the memory cell. SLC is the oldest of the three technologies, and you can hardly find a modern SSD with such a NAND. MLC is on board most of the drives, and TLC is a new word on the memory market for solid-state drives.
Attached Image

In general, TLC has long been used in USB flash drives, where memory endurance is of no practical importance. New technological processes can reduce the cost of a TLC NAND gigabyte for SSD, providing an acceptable speed and service life, which all manufacturers are logically interested in.

What is TRIM, GC, ITGC.

TRIM- command to the controller by the operating system, indicating remote data at the file system level. Not always supported in RAID arrays. To check the status of TRIM, you must enter (with elevated privileges) the command:
fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify
If the answer is:DisableDeleteNotify = 0- TRIM support is included;DisableDeleteNotify = 1- TRIM support is disabled.
Enable TRIM:fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 0

List of operating systems that support TRIM:
  • Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Linux 2.6.33 - Supported from February 2010
  • OpenSolaris - Supported from July 2010
  • FreeBSD 8.1 - Since July 2010 it is supported only for low-level formatting, full support is offered in version 9.0
  • Mac OS X - Supported (for the moment - only for SSDs that came with your computer) from version 10.6.6 with the corresponding update.

Garbage Collection (GC) - literally “garbage collection”, cleaning, the function of the SSD controller to return the cells freed from user data to their original state, corresponding to their maximum performance.
As a rule, this function is initiated by a user request from the outside, with proprietary software for a specific controller. For example, for Indilinx it is Wiper, for Intel it is Intel SSD ToolBox.
No GC utility can work with drives that are part of an array.
Idle Time Garbage Collection (ITGC) - the same as GC, but is initiated automatically by the controller itself when the disk is in idle mode.
A very useful feature, especially with high performance in second-generation Intel drives, is implemented even as part of an array.

What are the manufacturers.

A-Data, Asus, Corsair, Crucial, Goodram, Intel, Kingston, LaCie, OCZ, Plextor, Samsung, SanDisk, Seagate, Silicon Power, Toshiba, Transcend.
But the quality and reliability of the final product will depend on the controller used inside it, the type of memory and the device firmware version.

Common types of controllers.

Sandforce- Available in many versions. The SF-1200 and SF-1500 do not differ in performance. This controller is distinguished by the absence of an “external” cache memory; it is well tolerated in multi-threaded reading / writing; it has the highest (stated!) Speeds of reading and writing. Performance in linear sequential tests and random read / write tests drops by almost a third in occupied areas and is no longer restored after deleting data.
One of the last and very common -SF-2281used in drivesCorsair Force 3 / GT120GBOCZ Agility 3240GBOCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS240GBPatriot wildfire120GB and othersWhat is special about SandForce controllers, and should they be avoided?

OCZ SSD Software
OCZ Toolbox. The interface of the program is in English
  • <Drive>contains information about SSD: model, available volume, serial number, controller firmware version
  • <Tools>- Update the firmware of the drive, you need to connect to the Internet
  • <Security>- Secure Erase disk cleaning with the restoration of the previous speed, you must delete all partitions
  • <Details>- more information about the drive
  • <Identify Device Data>- low-level information about SSD
  • <SMART Read Data>- view S.M.A.R.T.

Marvell88SS9174- used in drivesCrucialC300 (32nm NAND), M4 / C400 (25nm NAND),Plextor(according to usage statistics, one of the fastest and relatively inexpensive drives), etc.

Intel- the controller, well proven in server applications, where Intel is traditionally at its best. Not bad in workstation scenarios. The disadvantage is the low write speed, which is actually not noticeable on everyday tasks.
Often sold under the brandKingstonWhich sculpts its sticker - inside is all the same. You can distinguish renamed disks from Intel by volume (40, 80, 120, or 160GB, in the future, 320)
Recommended for active work with the disk, especially with files of small and medium size (up to several megabytes).

Jmicron- the controller of the first generation SSD, little adapted for working with flash memory, has low performance and only 16K cache memory (which leads to its overflow in case of increasing load on the disk and the system hangs for a minute or two, waiting for the buffer to clear).
The only advantage of drives on this controller is a relatively low price. If the disk is not a system or not the only one, then this is an option, otherwise it is better to look for something newer.
Drives are based on this controller.OCZ Core, OCZ Soild, OCZ Apex(a pair of controllers in the array) and the mass of obscure low-cost disks.

Indilinx- the controller adapted for SSD and not having shortcomings Jmicron. Excellent recording performance is its main feature. Balanced performance (almost the same read and write speed) allows us to recommend drives on this controller for working with large files (video, etc.). Cleaning support is available, but works less efficiently than in the case of Intel. Performance strongly depends on the volume of the drive. Indilinx is currently a subsidiary of OCZ Technology.
Drives are based on this controller.OCZ Agility, OCZ Vertexand some drives from other manufacturers.

Samsung- Korean controller, designed with the disadvantages of JMicron. Despite the large amount of cache, a decent alternative to Indilinx failed. The system no longer freezes, sequential read / write performance at the Indilinx level and sometimes even higher, but a problem with non-sequential writing whose speed is not high.
Of the new products worth notingSamsung 830256GB, which shows quite good results.

What OS can be put on SSD.

It is best to use Windows 7 starting with SP 1 and subsequent versions of the OS. In Windows XP and below, there are no garbage collection mechanisms and TRIM instructions. The Microsoft TRIM OS is supported starting with Windows 7. In Windows Vista and XP, crutches are needed in the form of third-party software. How to install the OS on the SSD-drive.

Installing Windows on an SSD is no different from installing on a regular hard disk. But there are a couple of nuances. If you intend to use, in addition to the solid-state drive, also the HDD, then during the installation it is better to turn off all hard drives.
Transferring Windows from HDD to SSD is not recommended. Better to set from scratch.

How to check the speed of the SSD.

The speed of your SSD can be checked with a regular program -AS SSD Benchmark.
A popular benchmark program for testing the read / write speed of SSD drives. AS SSD Benchmark has actually become a standard when testing solid-state drives thanks to its synthetic read and write speed tests, as well as scoring systems. The program is distributed free of charge.

How to flash SSD?

  1. Find out the firmware version. (For example, with the help ofSSD Life. Where is the firmware number, indicated on the screen, below the spoiler 1)
  2. Find out on the manufacturer's website of your SSD which firmware is the latest.
  3. Read reviews about your firmware and new.
  4. Save all important data from disk.
  5. Download all files needed for flashing. If there is an instruction - carefully read and print out as desired. Prepare a USB flash drive if needed.
  6. If you do not understand something in the instructions, it is better to ask again on the forum, in the subjectSSD - flash-based drivesbefore you try to do something.
  7. Flash
  8. Check.
