Official firmware
Attention!Motorola announced on its website that our device will continue to work on Android 4.1.2. The latest software version at the moment:Android 4.1.2 Blur_Version.98.72.18_8.XT894.Verizon.en.USand there will be no further major improvements, only minor improvements without changing the version of Android!

Official firmware- This is primarily a guarantee of the stable operation of your smartphone. Experimenting with unofficial firmware or system modifications, it is almost impossible to “kill” the smartphone, and rolling back to the manufacturer’s firmware will help to return it to its original state, such as it was at the time of purchase.
You can upgrade to the latest official firmware version asautomatically, and manually using this instruction:

They allow you to get full access to the operating system: changing system files, running some third-party applications, backing up the system. Making root means getting superuser rights, more precisely, adding the ability to issue superuser rights to applications in the firmware. More in DevFAQ section .

Сustom Recovery
Custom recovery (custom recovery) are designed to replace the standard, built-in recovery, significantly expanding its capabilities, including they allow you to configure your smartphone to dualboot mode, when at the same time, "next door" there are two (and more) different independent operating systems. Moreover, this method allows you to simply, and most importantly, safely install third-party custom firmware without the risk of getting " brick "instead of your favorite smartphone.
Safestrap Recovery
Safestrap Recovery - An alternative menu for downloading a smartphone, allowing you to boot into one of the third-party user (custom) firmware. Loaded before the Android OS and, if the system is damaged, allows you to restore the backup. Also allows you to flash various patches in * .zip format (flash zip).
Currently, the current version is3.72 from Hashcode and 3.75 from Mentor are both based on TWRP 2.7, therefore, most of the functionality corresponds to the capabilities of TWRP 2.7
Features and functional description
It allows you to conveniently and without special skills (knowledge of console commands, etc.) to flash new firmware, patches, create backup copies of the system (firmware images) and other actions that are not standard for a regular Android user, but necessary. The stock recovery that comes with the default device, as a rule, has limited functionality, but the “craftsmen” and diverse development teams for almost all Android devices have created many alternative versions of recovery, one of which isSafestrap Recovery .
Safestrap Recovery features:
  • SELinux flag support for custom based on 4.4
  • Display brightness adjustment
  • Customizable vibration when pressing buttons
  • Check file system for errors

  • Installing unofficial firmware (up to 4 at once)
  • Installing add-ons and patches for firmware
  • Connect to PC via USB in USB drive mode
  • Connect to PC via USB in ADB mode
  • Creating a backup of all firmware, backing up individual parts (system, configuration, applications)
  • Restore from backups
  • Reset data to factory settings (Wipe ->Factory Reset), clearing the partition cache (Wipe Cache), clearing the Wipe Dalvik-cache, clearing the battery statistics (wipe battery stats)
  • Formatting and creating an ext partition on SD cards
Safestrap Recovery menu items:
Menu items on different devices and versions of the recovery may vary slightly
  • Reboot system - reboot the device
  • Apply Update.zip from SDcard - install update.zip file from the root of the memory card
  • Wipe Data / Factory Reset - a full wipe (clear, reset) of all settings and data, rollback to the factory state, clears / data and / cache in the device’s internal memory, and deletes the contents of the ".android_secure" folder on the SD card
  • Wipe Cache Partition - clearing the cache, partition / cache in memory
  • Install Zip from SDcard - install (firmware) a zip file from an SD card

Custom CyanogenMod 12.X Kernels
Currently, stable kernels that are regularly updated are available at [@XDA] . Post from user Dunkelhe .
Some general information:
  • The names (Run `N Gun, OC, OC Full) mean a series of cores. Differences in the used frequencies of the processor, which are indicated in brackets.
  • 1.4 and 1.3 - show the maximum frequency in GHz
  • ULW, LV, HW, - Voltage supplied to the processor. Accordingly, ultra low, low and high.
Unfortunately, there is no universal way to accurately determine the required core for each individual smartphone, even within the same model, so sometimes you have to go over a few for the optimal final version.
The first thing you need to pay attention to is the series. It depends on the speed and speed of battery consumption. On the one hand, the more steps between switching frequencies, the more economical the battery, but there is a loss in performance, and vice versa, the less used, the more productivity, but the battery consumption also increases. Community recommendation - the OC series is the golden mean between speed and battery consumption.
Different voltages are offered due to the individual characteristics of each specific smartphone. In the beginning it is worth trying the cores with LW, in case of failure, go to a higher voltage: HW.
If you have a bootlap with a frequency of 1.4 and HW, then you should try to take the core of a lower frequency - 1.3
FAQ
Chef, it's all gone! I screwed up with the firmware!
To roll back to the factory firmware, use Droid Utility or RSDLite. They work at the level of fastboot, so the guarantee of success in restoring a smartphone is 99.9%!
File transfer does not work in drive mode
Does the device work in Russian LTE networks?
Russian LTE frequencies are not supported by hardware. It is almost impossible to cure, because you need to re-chip the signal amplifier chip, nobody did this and is unlikely to do it.
How to force reboot the device
Press and hold simultaneously the power button and the lower volume key
How to login to Bootloader
When you turn on the smartphone, press and hold the power button and both volume keys
How to enter the built-in recovery
Only for smartphones with root access:
- ATbootloader select item Recovery
- After the appearance of a red triangle with an exclamation mark, press and release simultaneously both volume keys
The smartphone does not turn on, only the green LED is on
The smartphone does not charge from the outlet, only from the computer
The computer does not see the Droid 4, the smartphone is not recognized
Wi-Fi is intermittent, Internet is constantly lost.
  • Try changing the channel number on the router (less than 10)
  • If this is only with a home router, check if the WPA-Personal authentication method is worth it. If so, change to WPA2-Personal
  • And as a last option -WiFi_Fixer
Do not send SMS, do not work USSD requests
Most likely, you have a custom firmware. The problem is solved by editing build.prop , look at the point Activation of the GSM module Droid 4 (Android 4.x) in section Instructions .
If editing build.prop still does not solve the problem, then try
  • Download and installSMS Handcent, there go to the "Undelivered" folder and delete previously unsent messages, because Android puts all messages in the queue, and while there are unsent, it is not going to send new ones
  • Deactivate the Voice + application (VoicePlus), perhaps it is it that blocks the sending of messages.

Hello. Faced such a problem. I installed myself a CM11 and everything works just fine, except for the video. At a certain moment, the video both on YouTube and in the player freezes and produces a characteristic sound (crackling), after which the device restarts. I read somewhere here on the forum that there is such a problem in CM11, but I did not find any solution. Who knows how to solve this problem?

* Mark lilly, you need to use third-party clients.

Youtube is not from the play market, but from another resource? Already tried, the same problem.
P.S. I wanted to put CM12.1. Installed the firmware, on top of the patch and gaps, the phone hangs all the time in the Android is Starting mode, is it treated, or switch to another firmware?

* Mark Lilly,
New Pipe tried?

There already seemed to be talking about this - but with our Droid4, it may already be memory wear. Hence the glitches. My reboot itself had to be put on the shelf ...

memory wear

He rolled back to the official firmware, installed the patch and deleted a bunch of unnecessary "factory" stuff and the phone earned. Video works great, both in the player and on YouTube. Is New Pipe firmware?

Even with the junk, I already had a bug. Perhaps the brakes were due to a heap of background processes, LA is growing something ...

* Mark Lilly,in CM11 and CM13 there is this glitch from the video. The reason is some incompatibilities in the operation of the graphics accelerator. Eliminated by disabling hardware overlay (in the menu "For Developers"). BUT! After rebooting the device, this setting is reset - you have to re-climb in the menu and turn it off. This error has been fixed in LOS14. In the official firmware, it is also missing.

Hello. Faced such a problem. I installed the stock firmware, on top of it a patch from the mentor and everything worked fine. But after one of the discharge of the smartphone, it stopped turning on. I connect to the power supply, it shows 100% charge (in Safestrap Recovery), but it is enough to disconnect the charger as it immediately turns off. When connected to a PC, the green indicator light is on and nothing else. A couple of times I even managed to download it to the desktop, but it immediately disconnected. What is wrong and how to solve this problem?

Possible cause is battery overdischarge. You can try to unscrew the battery and recharge the "frog". But the controller seems to be in the battery itself ...

* S_Paul,
Took in a friend Universal Charger, removed the battery from the phone and connected to it. "Frog" immediately issued information that the battery is fully charged (the green LED lights up with the inscription Full), although I understand perfectly well that the battery has completely sat down.

P.S. Information that the battery is charged appears after connecting the "Frog" to the network. Otherwise, the ultrasound does not respond to the battery at all.

* Mark Lilly,in the subject before somewhere I met a description on the manufacture of a "service" Black Hat cableMotorola Droid 4 - Firmwares (Fast pedibear # 28527075)(item "More options"), but the link to the instruction is not working now. You can dig in this direction, in general ... But remember - you can turn the device off forever. Therefore, if there is a possibility - put the battery and sew in the usual way. The controller with the old battery, with experience with a soldering iron, can be transplanted to any other jar ...

I have compiled a new crDroid 7.1 firmware based on LineageOS 14.1.
More or less everything needs to work as on LineageOS 14.1.
Unfortunately, the error with turning off Wi-Fi after turning off the screen (as on LineageOS 14.1) also exists, but I don’t know how to fix it or more precisely to debug it.

Here you can download it:
http: //www.mediafire.c...serati-v3.8.9.zip/file
Mirror:
https://my.pcloud.com/…7I9KkRBSyD3WqR1k9PHo5k

A few tips on compiling this build for Droid 4 (I ran into errors and problems, etc.) can be read in Englishin this post on xda.
