Old school

Welcome, dear lovers of hard rock, old school!

Join us, tell us which hard rock bands you like, which albums or tracks you think are the best in their work. Share interesting facts about your favorite groups, links, news and news of their work.

Hard rock (English hard rock, literally hard rock or hard rock) - a genre of rock music, characterized by the dedicated role of the rhythm section, mainly bass guitars and percussion instruments. Compositions of this genre are often built on riffs in figures with a size of 4/4. Hard rock was born in the 1960s, acquired its usual forms in the late 1960s - early 1970s, and it flourished in the early 1970s, with the participation of bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.
From hard rock to the mid-70s, heavy metal branched off, giving rise to all the "metal" music. The term “hard rock” is sometimes also used as a hyperonym for “heavy” genres, such as heavy metal, grunge, etc., in order to distinguish them from pop rock.

Deep purple
Created in March-April 1968 as a result of a series of casual, but happy acquaintances, the group played at the level of the requirements of the time, inspired by the work of Beatles and Vanilla Fudge.
The first album "Shades Of Deep Purple", recorded in some eighteen hours, looked experimental and rough - long instrumentals and unpredictable improvisations.

Deep purple([diːp ˈpɜː (ɹ) .pəl]) - a British rock band formed in February 1968 (first called Roundabout) in Hartford, England, and considered one of the most notable and influential in the "heavy music" of the 1970s yo Music critics call Deep Purple among the founders of hard rock and appreciate their contribution to the development of progressive rock and heavy metal. The musicians of the “classic” composition of Deep Purple (in particular, guitarist Richie Blackmore, keyboard player John Lord, drummer Ian Paice) are considered instrumental virtuosos. Deep Purple is a great band. I still wonder how in those years it was possible to invent such music. All the main members of the group are absolute geniuses of their work. And you can safely learn to play musical instruments and take an example from them. Do you want to become a drummer? Learn from Jan Pace! a guitar player? Feel free to choose Richie Blackmore. attract keys? you need the great John Lord! etc. : happy:
P.S. Very upset about the recent death of John Lord. Eternal memory and glory to him!

Uriah heep
Uriah Heep created their own, original version of hard rock, saturating it with elements of prog, art, jazz rock and heavy metal. The signature mark of their style (in the “golden years”) was spectacular backing vocals with complex multi-frequency harmonies and David Byron’s dramatic vocals. The stylistic experiments of Uriah Heep were essential for the development of rock music.

It was just a nightmare.
Conflicts, drinking, drugs, doom ... And among all this, sometimes there was even time for music. In this exclusive piece from the official biography of Uriah Heep “Wizards And Demons” written by Dave Ling, Classic Rock recalls which was one of the most enduring teams in the crazy 70s.

Despite the susceptibility to various destructive influences, Uriah Heep managed to take a strong position in the ranks of the hard rock elite of the 70s. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the fact that in the following years the Uriah Heep played an important role in the conquest of America by the British, which was led by Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Open hostility from the press was not a problem for them, and tens of thousands of fans invariably came to their concerts, wherever and whenever they performed.

Anyway, in 1974, internal conflicts began to affect the group - for example, disagreements with Jerry Bron, founder of Bronze Records and producer of the team, growing rivalry between vocalist David Byron and keyboard player and guitarist Ken Hensley. Ken's addiction to cocaine only added fuel to the fire.

“And in his best times, David was a very difficult man,” says Jerry Bron. - He was a master of creating intolerable situations. But Ken was far from an angel. Most noticeably, all this affected the album “Wonderworld”.

Byron's problem was his love of alcohol, especially Chivas Regal brandy. For him, it was a means of dealing with the inevitable attacks of anguish. And while Byron was more and more attached to the bottle, bassist Gary Thane was addicted to heroin and slid down on his own hell. As for Ken, paranoia, depression, and instant mood swings became side effects of his chosen poison. The situation was aggravated by the fact that Ken continued to be the main songwriter of the team, and, as always, the release of the next killer album, Neher, depended on him. The tension that prevailed during the Wonderworld sessions showed too much to David, Ken and even guitarist Mick Box.

“It was a terrible nightmare,” recalls Mick, shaking his head thoughtfully. “Ken was predominantly occupied by sitting in his room crying, and David was making incredible booties. One of my most vivid memories is how I tried to take him across the road that separated the studio from the hotel. Cars were whistling past us, but David was only concerned not to spill the cocktails he carried in both hands. When we got to the hotel, we didn't find Ken there. That's how I spent most of the time - trying to get everyone together, which was almost impossible. ”

Neher was recorded abroad, and the unusual atmosphere only added Hensley a headache. But, despite the fact that he was increasingly used to drugs, he was still able to compose classical songs. But now, after many years, Mick Box insists that his own contribution and the contribution of the other participants Neher was not appreciated.

“At that time, our strength was that we could make any song sound cool,” emphasizes the guitarist. - Ken brought a naked idea - he played a melody on an acoustic guitar, we processed it, and then she lived with her own life. We felt invincible. We are still saying: “Give us only a stage for a performance, and no one can beat us.”

Boxing also notes that Byron was becoming more and more selfish: “We all continued to work, but the burden of fame began to affect David. And the cracks became noticeable. The managers listened to only one of us - Ken Hensley, and David was very upset. Each of them led his game. Ken wrote great songs, and Dave sang them and pulled all the attention to himself. ”

When I ask if the others were tempted to push Hensley and Byron together with their blunt foreheads, drummer Lee Kerslake grins hopelessly. "We tried! - he says. “I somehow grabbed them both by the hair and said,“ I will shake you until I knock all the crap out of you. ” It was always like this - 300,000 people were waiting for us outside the walls of the dressing room, while we sat and argued about the little things. There was a lot of nonsense. ”

Despite the fact that circumstances were evolving against them, Mick Box somehow managed to rally the musicians, and as a result Wonderworld appeared. Perhaps this album lacked the strength of its predecessor “Sweet Freedom”, but, of course, it retained many features of the Neher style. However, now, looking back and remembering “Wonderworld”, many participants are not particularly excited about this.

“There were less and less powerful songs overall,” says Hensley. - We fought with a whole host of demons. At first, fame did not cause us any particular inconvenience, because this was what we were striving for and we enjoyed it. But over time, fame became more important than music. The fact that we had to work long hours was not a problem, because we got used to it. But for the first time it all affected the music. We underwent a crisis, probably without realizing it. Naturally, with such high needs, it was difficult to maintain a creative process. ”

“We should have some rest,” Box reflects. “We lived a full life, and when you rush through life at breakneck speed, you start thinking about rest.” In one month we received more impressions than others in our entire life. I am sure that this is why some teams could not reach our days. "

When Tane was electrocuted directly on stage during the 1974 American tour, conflicts temporarily stopped. Subsequently, Thane said: “I only remember how I approached the amplifier: I wanted to adjust the equalizer so as to add treble for my bass. And suddenly fainted. David immediately realized that I was electrocuted, he rushed to me and pulled the bass out of my hands. At first he decided that I was dead, because I was lying lifeless, like a corpse. ”

By the way, Thane expressed his displeasure with Jerry Bron: “I think he decided that I was pretending. Everyone forgot about the music, now it was already a financial question. ”

Unfortunately for Thane, his stay in the Uriah Heep, and his whole life, was coming to an end. He had never been healthy and strong before, and an accident had undermined his health, already weakened by his addiction to heroin. It was impossible to rely on it, and the team had practically no choice but to replace it.

Just three months later, Tane's girlfriend, Yoko Sagiriya, found him dead in a bathroom in his home in south London. He took an overdose of heroin. And although it is impossible to prove it, there is an assumption that his strong drug addiction was the result of his expulsion from the group precisely when he most needed help and support. However, Ken Hensley believes that there is little that could then help Thane.

“Personally, in those days I didn’t cope well with the situation,” he admits. - I am so addicted to drugs that I was not in my best form. At that time, of course, I was not a particularly good member of the group. We were all so preoccupied with our own problems that we could not pay enough attention to Tain and help him cope with his troubles. I understand that heroin is a very strong drug; but I never used it myself, so I don’t know ... We just couldn’t support Gary anymore. We drove him on the planes until the last moment, we begged the pilots to allow him to fly with us, even though he was not able to travel. And we somehow managed to play concerts with him. ”

In addition to the musicians themselves, a significant part of the blame falls on the shoulders of the managers of the group, who very clearly imagined what was happening. According to Mick Box, instead of surrounding the musicians with care and care, as the situation demanded, the managers drove them on tour right after the accident with Thane.

“From their side there was no support, they sent us to earn almighty dollars,” he sighs softly. “And for Gary, this was the beginning of a crash.” Now no one would allow this to happen. Take a look at Toxic Twins (guitarist Aerosmith Joe Perry and vocalist Stephen Tyler): someone realized that they brought huge profits, and they were sent to the clinic for treatment. We had the same problems with Gary and David, but did not give them any support. ”

Even after the death of Thane, Hensley did not change his addiction. “On the same day, when I learned of his death, I went and sniffed cocaine,” he later admitted. “I thank God for relieving me of my addiction.” Thane’s successor was former Family / King Crimson / Roxy Music bassist - John Wetton. He knew how to write songs, was a talented vocalist and a gifted instrumentalist. However, according to Ken Hensley, in reality it was not so easy to make a replacement: “We didn’t change bass players, we replaced an important component of the team as a whole,” he notes. “Actually it was the beginning of the end.”

A native of Derby, Wetton was invited to join Neer after he unexpectedly met them in Miami, while still a member of Roxy Music.

"At the first meeting with David Byron, I told him:" Consider, I am ambitious and I am going to become a vocalist and write songs. " And he replied: "As long as this does not concern my group, I do not mind." That's how David and I became true friends.

In King Crimson, I played a ridiculously complex music with very unusual dimensions, ”Wetton continues. - The offer to play with Uriah Neer promised me a life-giving respite. I could be myself, have fun and play really powerful rock music. I didn’t come to Neher for the money. At that time, Roxy Music offered me the same money as Uriah Neher, if not more. I just didn't want to stay with Roxy Music. ”

The first recording released with Wetton was the 1975 album Return To Fantasy. The title track instantly became a hit for the fans of Neuer, this gothic masterpiece still remains in the concert repertoire of the team. The rest of the album's songs, however, turned out to be definitely below the level. Jeff Barton from the music newspaper Sounds described him as a “good rock album,” but criticized Jerry Bron’s “predictable and too clear and neat” sound production. He didn’t particularly like the journalist and Byron’s vocals, which he described with such phrases as "castrated harmonies" and "deliberate embellishment of musical material."

The rest of the British music newspapers, as usual, went on the attack. One of them wrote: “This album is painfully boring. If it occurred to you to watch TV with the sound turned off, then it will suit you. The track “Prima Donna”, from which the second side of the record begins, is like a song that was abandoned by the Status Quo because it is not complicated enough. David Byron's singing is monotonous and monotonous, Mick Box as a guitar player is prone to minimalism, and Ken Hensley seems to use his keyboards, more like electronic tweeters than like a musical instrument.

Perhaps Neer was most sharply criticized by NME journalist Tony Stewart, who wrote: “Neher is trying to keep up with three hares at the same time. Do they want to be "heavy"? Do they want to restore their reputation, stained by the album "Wonderworld"? Or do they want to show off as authors of good songs and performers of good music? In fact, they should overcome the internal conflicts that tear apart their collective. ”

Be that as it may, Bronze did a good deed by promoting and selling Return To Fantasy. In Britain, about £ 10,000 was spent on television advertising and £ 3,000 on radio advertising. As a result, the album there has risen high in the charts, in addition, he hit the charts in America, Europe, Australia and Japan.

"Return To Fantasy" is truly one of the best-selling albums in Britain. " Neher, but you cannot come to one promotion to success, it should be laid at the very foundation, ”Wetton later said. - In fact, it was a very good disc, it was exactly what people wanted to hear from Uriah Neher. And although the album was a bit complicated, it marked the return of the band to its roots. ”

After releasing the album, Neher went on a tour of Scandinavia, the rest of Europe, Britain, the States and Canada. Bron predicted that during this journey the length of the year the team would perform in front of a million fans and fly 30,000 miles by plane. The diary of the behind-the-scenes life of Nep includes many bottles of Dom Perignon champagne, which were mostly drunk straight from the throat, as well as vodka, beer and other drinks, which the musicians gave personal preference to. “You only need a little star dust to make you feel great,” Kerslake grins.

“The promoters gave us everything we asked for,” adds Ken, surprised. - When we demanded 10 limousines, we were given them. We brought 50 bottles of champagne. ”

But everything was not so cloudless. During the fourth concert, in Louisville, Kentucky, in America (touring on which 42 shows were supposed), Boxing, as you know, fell off the stage and broke his right arm. “I drank my usual dose of alcohol,” he recalls, “and a bottle of Remy Martin helped me overcome the pain, because the concert continued. But then I fell off the stage again and broke the other wrist in two places! ”Contrary to the advice of the doctors, Boxing continued the tour, sometimes playing with his left hand in a cast.

Ironically, at the Cleveland festival, where 80,000 Neher fans gathered, Byron insisted that each band member ride the 200 yards that separated the hotel of the festival site in a personal limousine. “Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult and The Faces were performing at the festival,” Mick smirks, “and everyone was trying to outdo each other. As a result, Rod Stewart, who flew by helicopter, bypassed us all! ”

As this anecdote shows, the problems of Neher related to drugs, alcohol and excessive self-love did not, of course, disappear after the death of Gary Tain. And the forthcoming release of David Byron's solo album “Take No Prisoners” only aggravated the situation. Hensley, who already tried his solo career, released the albums “Proud Words On A Dusty Shelf” (or “Brown Turds On A Rusty Elf,” as Boxing sometimes called him) and “Eager To Please” seemed to continue to focus on in a team. But didn't Byron become too presumptuous?

“Some of those who heard my album and know the work of Uriah Neher, told me that he looks like Uriah Neher more than Uriah Neher does to himself,” David told the newspaper “Sounds”. “Others said it sounded as Uriah Neer should have sounded.”

But a sinister omen intended for David Byron was already inscribed on the wall. The musical differences were aggravated by the confidence of his colleagues that David’s antics jeopardized the career of the band itself. In 1975, in the Philadelphia Spectrum, the situation reached a climax. Years later, Hensley explained: “First, I want to say that all of us then had our own problems. I have, for example, cocaine, and David was constantly drunk. In Philadelphia, where 25,000 spectators gathered, David had an incident with a microphone stand: he stepped on it and cut his lip. And the crowd immediately screamed. He decided that everyone was laughing at him, and then covered the audience with obscenities all evening.

“Dave told the audience a lot of nasty things,” recalls the skeptic Box. - I was just setting up the guitar and could not turn around and look at the audience. After that, we had nothing to do in Philadelphia. Later, in the dressing room, we started scolding him, and he just pointed to his stage costume and said: “What do you mean by calling me imprudent?” That's when we realized that he stopped catching the essence of what was happening. We talked to him about music, and he was about something completely different. ”

Hensley: “The following year in Philadelphia we couldn’t sell tickets even to the Box Theater, which has only 3,000 seats. Worst of all, David continued to pursue his solo career, while neglecting us. He disgraced us. We told him about it, but it all continued the same way. And we spoke again, and again everything went on as before. ”

Hensley could no longer bear it and flew home during the tour. His decision was not just a flash of irritation: “I flew home because I realized that we were in trouble,” he explains. - It was the only way to get everyone’s attention. But such a move did not solve the problem. He was only the beginning of a very sad end.

I told Jerry Bronu that it could not go on like this. Each of our concerts was to our detriment rather than good. It was no good. And we decided that David needed to find a replacement. It was really sad because David was as irreplaceable as Gary. I wanted to quit everything, but Jerry continued to support me, saying that we needed to release another album or go on another tour and so on. That's how I lasted three years more than I really would like. ”

According to the testimony of Classic Rock photographer Fina Costello, who in the 70s often worked with Neher, the musicians sometimes tried to joke in order to defuse the painful situation.

“Everyone knew that David Byron would not come on stage without drinking his cocktail of champagne and orange juice. And at a concert in Hamburg, one of the musicians decided to have some fun and sent him tea instead, ”laughs Costello. - David got angry when he saw 25 carts of tea in the corridor, which one after another were heading to his room. ”

Of course, David was not the only drinker. For a long time rock'n'rollrs are famous for their irresponsibility. According to one of the rock legends, a certain musician was arrested for drinking drunk at the wheel of his Rolls-Royce. When the policeman ordered an absolutely deranged driver to get out of the car, he long and stubbornly refused to do it, until the constable put his hand on his shoulder and muttered: "My dear, you are arrested."

Deciding to stay in Neher, Ken Hensley resolutely set about writing a new album, which was later named “High And Mighty”. By then, David Byron had completely retired from writing. Another remarkable feature of the album was that it was not Jerry Bron who produced it, but the Uriah Neher themselves.

“Our albums were getting worse and we didn't understand why. If we could do anything about it, ”Hensley recalls. - According to one of the theories of David, we should have dismissed Jerry Bron, but in fact we ourselves were to blame. We let the situation get too complicated. ”

When High And Mighty came out in May 1976, Sounds described it as a “step in the right direction.” Even NME reluctantly agreed with this: “This album is quite good in some places,” although observer Bob Edmunds did not fail to sarcastically grumble: “The texts of Ken Hensley shed light on why they love him so much abroad.”

In the following years, High And Mighty divided the fans of Neher into two camps: those who liked it (there were a minority of those), and all the rest. In 1976, Byron said the following about this recording: “We decided to make an album of Ken’s songs, but in fact we should have included the songs of each of us. And Mick Box has played only a few guitar parts. ”

Hensley himself is still fascinated by “High And Mighty”, in part because “it was like recording a solo album with a band. Nobody had more songs, and John Wetton and I found a musical space for both of us, he explains. “But the album was not commercially successful, because it really had nothing to do with the Uriah Neher albums. Rather, it resembled “Look Yourself” and recalled those times: when we were allowed to do everything that we wanted. But now we could not record anything like that, because the public was waiting for us to record a certain kind

The album is not understood even in America - Hensley continues. “Jerry Bron chose to bury him, and I think our decision to fire him was largely due to this.

Jerry hated High And Mighty. He called him terrible. I don’t think it was true. Probably, he just initially decided for himself that he would in no way like our creation, no matter what we did there, because all the time we were directing and pushing it. I think it was a natural human reaction. ”

In 1992, Hensley developed this thought: “At High And Mighty, we went far away from the Uriah Heep. My task was to write an album and produce it. No one stood in my way. Give me a finger, and I'll take the whole hand, no problem. "

Mick Box describes “High And Mighty” as “less difficult and simpler,” and admits that the tension of a situation often caused him to defuse it in the only way he knew. I often said: “Why should we sit here and listen to this nonsense? Let's go to the pub. ” The name of the album in some way characterizes our then state ”.

Boxing recalls how, once, during a recording, Byron sprawled on the floor, trying to record a voice through one of the microphones intended for Lee Kerslake's drums. “Jerry Bron entered the studio,” he grins, “he saw what we were doing there, declared that we were all crazy, and left.”

As Ken had previously mentioned, to this day, some members of the Uriah Heep suspect that Jerry Bron, in retaliation for having been squeezed from the production chair, paid much less attention to marketing to High And Mighty than usual. The cover of the album, which depicted a winged pistol flying in a clear blue sky, was of course completely faded.

In the course of the High And Mighty promo tour, John Wetton became the second bass player, Neher, who was electrocuted hard at: price. Fortunately, the blow was not fatal, but Wetton was injured.

“It happened in Minneapolis. “I fell on my back, right on the drum set,” Wetton recalls. - Falling down, I strongly dislocated my knee. And this dislocation was felt then for several more years. I have no idea why this happened. Lee Kerslake said that a blue flash flashed between the microphone and my mouth. And the next moment I flew six meters from the place where I had just stood. ”

Meanwhile, David Byron’s hour was near. Concerts at Wembley in 1976 were his last performances as part of Neher. During a performance in Sweden, he was so drunk that he fell off the stage and sang the first six songs of the program from the orchestra pit. The incident in Spain was the last straw. Neher arrived at the stadium, where they were supposed to perform, ahead of time and found that everything was closed. Byron entered into a rage, began to shout: "Yes, they know who I am?" And smashed glass doors to enter.

“Somehow we played this concert in Spain,” Box says sighing, “but I think even David was already resigned to the fact that it's all over for him.”

In July 1976, Jerry Bron finally published the group's statement, which said: "We can no longer put up with how David Byron treats us, so we are acting in the way that is required by the interests of Uriah Heep as a whole." The musicians were asked to pick up a new vocalist. Hensley, who had flown in specially from the States to talk with the press, said: “I cannot say that there will be no more changes. We must find the right way out. ”

According to some of the most ardent fans of Uriah Heep, the magic of the group has gone along with its charismatic talisman. Everyone understood that the dismissal of Byron was a terribly risky business. Despite all the reservations about the dark side of his soul, Hensley and Boxing were well aware of what kind of emptiness would arise after he left.

“David was a fantastic frontman, and in that respect he was indispensable,” says Hensley. - We were not friends in the generally accepted sense of the word. When I had free time, I preferred to leave and do something with my own - drive a car, relax, write songs and record demos, so I never got close to any member of the group. They say David once said in one interview: "When I sing Ken's songs, I feel nothing, I just sing them, that's all." I do not know what mood he was in when he said this. One of David's most remarkable virtues was his ability to interpret and express the feelings inherent in any song, whether mine or anyone else. I think he said that because he was just a little angry. ” Mick Box talks about his own doubts related to the dismissal of Byron: “Of course, I was afraid of the consequences that the group had expected. Dave, with his copyright and performing skills, left behind a vacuum, which was very difficult to fill. But it was necessary to do something. And if we are to speak quite honestly, even if everything then completely collapsed, it would not disturb me much. I knew how to play the guitar, I could go somewhere and do something else. I became a musician to make a living, so I knew that I could always find a niche for myself. ”

When David Byron was asked to leave, he was not shocked. Instead of telling everyone and everything about how angry he was, David told the press that he understood the reasons for such a turn of events: “I am completely free now,” he said humbly in an interview with NME. - Everything that has torn me apart for years is now left behind. Yes, I got fired. But I'm not mad at the guys. Either I have outgrown them, or they are me. ”

Expressing his friendly feelings for John Wetton, Byron also told the NME that he had already left Neher three times for various reasons, but every time he was persuaded to return. The band's concert tickets continued to go bang, but, as David pointedly pointed out, “How long could this go on if albums were getting worse and worse?”

In a longer interview with Sounds journalist Dave Fugger, Byron spoke about his complaints about “people who worked with the team. It seems to me that in the past two years they have ceased to believe in us (and, perhaps, were right). We could fly to America, not knowing where we will perform. ”

Two weeks after Byron was fired, John Wetton left the group. Perhaps in this decision some kind of irony was caught, because Byron’s departure opened up a long-awaited opportunity for Vetton to become a frontman and sing, which he did during those two weeks in Britain and in Asia, until he began to work solo.

“Most of all I appreciated the feeling of comradeship. It was a great team, Wetton later explained. - While it came to music, everything was just great. But I really do not like it when they slander and envy each other in the group. ”

“Sometimes the corpse of some band comes into the world and goes on another tour, releases another album,” he told NME about his departure, “it happened with Deep Purple and threatened to happen with Uriah Neher. David's voice was no longer the same three or four years ago. He wore it, singing in the upper registers every night. He would not be offended at me for these words, because it was a sort of friendly advice, but he needed to take a break from touring for three months or even six months, but the group could not - or did not want - to allow it.

The team turned against him because the guys decided that he was harming their reputation, and in the end, he was kicked out. “David's dismissal was very offended,” Wetton adds sadly. “No one likes being fired, and David, moreover, was very proud of himself, like any musician.” I think, to ease the pain, he tried to resort to the only anesthesia he knew. ”

Unfortunately, February 28, 1985 Byron was gone. His death was associated with excessive drinking. Shortly before that, he divorced his wife Gabriella. According to media reports, his body was discovered by his stepbrother.

He was 37. His solo ambitions were buried four years earlier, when he failed on the stage of the London Marquee Club. After the last Christmas, he had only half a year to live.

Some believe that the departure of Gloria (named somehow by one of the representatives of a narrow circle of people close to Neher “a vain and limited woman”) killed the thirst for life in him. Others claim that the death of the vocalist was accelerated by his unsuccessful solo career. Deprived of the attention that, in his opinion, deserved, Byron could simply refuse to make any further attempts.

His latest manager, Maggi Fagran, expressed the following opinion: “Fame came to David when record labels generously spent huge amounts of money on rock stars, and he was used to seeing his name in the splendor of lights. He had a really wonderful voice, but in the past few years no one has been able to give him enough time, care and attention to bring him back to health and popularity. ”

Mick Box was on tour when he learned of Byron's death. “For two weeks I drank deeply because I could not accept it,” recalls the guitarist. - Even in the times of Uriah Neher, he very much loved the scene. He was a very insecure person. It was difficult for him to build relationships with other people. He just wanted to stay on stage. He could cope with everything, just to go on stage and be a star.

From our very first meeting, ”Box continues,“ David has always convinced me that he will become famous. And he was right. If he could somehow control his life, maybe he would become much more famous. He was a very talented vocalist, he had a wonderful voice. He could be a huge success, speaking solo. But he was easily persuasive and was too trusting. And if someone wanted to make him get drunk, then he succeeded. David just didn’t know how to say no.
A lot of letters!
P.S.
For me, with the departure of David Byron,Uriah heep almost over, in my opinion, his most important component - vocals ...

For me the best years are 1975-1979.

And I, the best from 1976 to 1980. It was from the album "Destroyer" that KISS learned, from the compositionDetroit rock city, in that, album, version, still goosebumps ... It was heard by the live album Alive II, and then four disks came out at once:

1978 assumed the simultaneous release of four members of their solo albums. Although the group complained that the release of four solo albums was intended to ease the growing tension with the group, their 1976 contract called for the release of four solo albums before the large-scale edition of the fifth. Although each album was a solo achievement only (none of the participants played on the album with the other), they were marked and published as Kiss albums (with similar covers and posters inside). It was the only time when all four members published a solo album on the same day. The albums were named simply, but with taste - "Peter Criss, Ace frehley, Paul Stanley"And"Gene simmons.

For the band members, this was a chance to demonstrate their musical tastes and trends, stylistic inclinations outside Kiss (Simmons album included the appearance of Aerosmith members Joe Perry, Cheap Trick (eng.), Rick Nielsen (eng.), Disco diva Donna Summer, Bob Seeger, and later - girlfriend Cher). Stanley and Fralli albums were close to that hard rock, glam rock and metal that Kiss used, while Criss's album included R & B elements and was saturated with ballads. Simmons' album was the most eclectic, including hard rock, pop in the best traditions of the Beatles, ballads and a cover version of "When You Wish upon a Star" (from the cartoon "Pinocchio"). In the struggle for the hearts of fans, the strength of the musicians turned out to be approximately equal, from the disks by the end of the year, over 1,250,000 copies were sold in circulation, and the total circulation exceeded 5 million. The most popular radio hit was the song from Ace Frehley's album “New York Groove”, which reached the top 2 lines of the sales rating.

The album "Peter Criss" opened the world of ballads to me, I remember - sawed it to the holes ... The album "Unmasked" was the last, then there were other hobbies.

Metallica is an American metal band that plays thrash metal and heavy metal music, formed in 1981.
Metallica has had a great influence on the development of metal and is included (along with such groups as Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax) in the “big four of thrash metal”. Albums of Metallica were sold in a total of more than 100 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most commercially successful metal bands. In 2011, one of the largest metal music magazines Kerrang! in the June issue, recognized Metallica as the best rock band of the last 30 years.

Pink floyd

Among the new psychedelic groups that appeared like an explosion in London in 1967 was a quartet called "The Pink Floyd". In the small, smoky clubs like "UFO" or "Rounhouse", "The Pink Floyd" admired the London scene with their long, instrumental jams free from any form. Young "children of flowers" were dragged from the exciting new sounds in the halls that seemed to be swaying and rising like spots of multicolored liquid light streaming down the walls around them.
"The Pink Floyd" may have been even more psychedelic than the "Cream" and "The Jimi Hendrix Experience", which debuted in the same 1967.

Over the next year, however, the band was forced to confront the rapidly deteriorating mental state of Sid Barrett, their brilliant but unstable guitarist and leader. In 1968, "The Pink Floyd" got rid of the article "The" in the title and from Sid Barrett. Guitarist David Gilmour, school friend Sid, replaced him. Undoubtedly, "The Pink Floyd" was Barrett's brainchild and his restless genius later served as a theme for some of the band's best songs.

But the man whose lyrical guitar sound created the signature sound of Pink Floyd, and gave them the opportunity to gain world fame in the seventies, when the smoky clubs gave way to huge arenas and stadiums, was David Gilmore. Continuously developing instrumental canvases of the group have reached the highest levels of complexity, perfectly complementing their otherworldly images used during the concerts.

The next big breakup in Pink Floyd happened only in 1985, when David Gilmore and bassist Roger Waters parted ways. Gilmore remained the sole leader in the group until 1987. Without Waters' lyricism, Gilmore's fierce, unbridled guitar — the core of the band since the days of the “flower children” - has become even more significant.

Today, David Gilmour is a famous, gray-haired English gentleman who instantly becomes young as he picks up a guitar. In connection with the release of "Shine On", the new box set "Pink Floyd", Gilmore agreed to share his memories with the magazine Guitar World

Guitar World: There is a famous story about how Cid Barrett was kicked out of the band in 1968: you all drove in a van to a concert in Southampton ...

Gilmour: No, not in the van. We went to the Bentley.

Guitar World: Right. And suddenly someone said: "Let's not take Sid today." Can you remember who said that?

Gilmour: Probably Roger. Anyway, not me - I was then a newcomer to the group. I was sitting in the back seat. Perhaps someone said: "Will we drive for Sid?" And Roger probably answered in a conspiratorial tone) "No, let's not." And we went to Southampton.

Guitar World: You did not feel yourself at first Sid's surrogate?

Gilmour: Of course I did. They wanted me to play his parts and sing his songs. No one else wanted to sing them, and they chose me. Basically, that’s what I did, at least in terms of live shows. I spoke with Sid just five times. Or maybe four. Maybe the fifth was supposed to be a concert in Southampton, I do not remember exactly. While all this was happening, we were trying to make a new album, "A Saucerful of Secrets". But "live" we did not play songs from it, but played all the old ones written by Syd. Since there was nothing else to do. It was nevertheless better than playing covers of Bo Diddley again.

Guitar World: What influenced the group's decision to record such a long and difficult to understand instrumental, like "A Saucerful of Secrets" (1968)?

Gilmour: Hard to say. I only joined the group shortly before. I don't think the group really knew what they wanted after Sid left. "A Saucerful of Secrets" meant a lot to us, it showed us the way to go. Take "A Saucerful of Secrets", "Atom Heart Mother" (Atom Heart Mother, 1970) and "Echoes" (Meddle, 1971) - everything logically follows to "Dark Side of the Moon". The creation of "Saucerful" by Roger and Nick (Mason, Pink Floyd's drummer) was inspired by their drawing fancy figures on a piece of paper. Then we composed music based on the structure of the painting. We tried to write music repeating the peaks and valleys of the drawing. My role, I suspect, was to try to give it all a bit of musicality, to create a balance between formlessness and clarity, disharmony and harmony.

Guitar World: There are different opinions as to whether Sid participated in the recording of "A Saucerful of Secrets" ...

Gilmour: No, it's all a lie. Sid is on three or four other songs from the album, such as "Remember a Day" or "Jug Band Music" (the only composition on the album written by Syd). He also played a little in "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun." I think as much as me.

Guitar World: Do you remember any of the tricks you used to create an unusual guitar sound when recording a song?

Gilmour: Well, while recording the middle section of "A Saucerful of Secrets", most of the time the guitar was on the studio floor. You probably know that the microphone stands have three metal legs about a foot long?

I unscrewed one of them and slid it along the strings very slowly up and down. Another method that I began to use a little later was that I took a piece of iron and drove it in circular motions across the strings. Just move it and hold it in places where it sounds good, like a bow.

Guitar World: How did you get the idea to use a slide guitar in the instrumental "One of These days" on the album "Meddle" (1971)?

Gilmour: I think I was never confident in my abilities regarding my own guitar playing, so I tried to use all the tricks I knew.

I have always liked sessile or pedal-style guitars, and the like. The only reason why I didn’t use the slide guitar all the time was the very “thing” that I had to put on my finger. It always annoyed me.

Guitar World: Who composed this 7/4 branded intro for the song "Money" on the album "Dark Side of the Moon" (1973)?

Gilmour: This is Roger's riff. By the time we first heard the song, Roger was more or less ready to have verses and words. We just came up with the middle part, guitar solo and all that. We also composed several new riffs - we decided on the size 4/4 for the guitar solo, and the unfortunate saxophonist was forced to play 7/4. The lull during the second chorus in solo was my idea.

Guitar World: What was the role of producer / sound producer Chris Thomas on "Dark Side of the Moon"?

Gilmour: Chris Thomas was involved in mixing, and his main task was to stop the controversy between me and Roger about how to mix it up. I wanted the “Dark Side” to sound loud and gloomy, with strong reverberation and stuff like that. And Roger "moved back" on that one. to create a very "dry", clear sound. I think it was influenced by John Lennon’s first solo album ("Plastic Ono Band"), which sounded very dry. we argued so long that we decided to resort to the opinion of a third party. We left the mix to Chris so that he could do it to his own taste, with the help of sound engineer Alan Parsons. Of course, one day I discovered that Roger still climbs with his advice. Then I began to climb with the tips. And since then, we sat behind Chris, interfering with the mixing process. Fortunately. Chris was closer to my point of view.

Guitar World: Was this the first album when friction arose between you and Roger?

Gilmour: Yes, friction was always there, but they could still be controlled until we began work on the album "The Wall".

Guitar World: There are creative differences and open enmity ...

Gilmour: There are creative differences and controversies caused by final self-centeredness and delusions of grandeur, if you so desire.

Guitar World: Have you been pressured to follow the success of Dark Side of the Moon when recording "Wish You Were Here" (1975)?

Gilmour: Yes, that was exactly what bothered Roger while recording. This is reminiscent of the feeling with which we ended the "Dark Side" - "What can we do even when everything is already done?" However, we were able to overcome it. And, from my point of view, "Wish You Were Here" is our best album. I really love him. I mean, I'd rather listen to him than the "Dark Side of the Moon". Because on "Wish you Were Here" we have achieved a better balance between music and words. "Dark Side" went too far in terms of the significance of the lyrics. Sometimes melodies were ignored, were only a means to convey the words to the listener. In my opinion, one of Roger's failures is that in his quest to bring the lyrics to the listener, he uses far from the most successful means.

Guitar World: Throughout the 70s and 80s, each successive Pink Floyd album became more and more technically difficult. Was it hard for you to reflect this growing complexity on the stage, for example, at the time of "Animals" (1977)?

Gilmour: Of course, very difficult. We spent years gathering specialists around us in order to have qualified support in all areas of our activities. It was always hard work, but it was reflected in the quality of our performances.

Guitar World: When did you feel more at ease: in the early period of free psychedelic experiments on stage or later when you relied on a carefully rehearsed production?

Gilmour: Somewhere in the middle, I suppose. The show "The Wall" was a great and great achievement. But I had to take on the role of music director, if you like, and deal with purely technical problems so that Roger would not think about them. I had a huge sheet (we all had those on the monitors or at the curtain), where the settings of my amplifiers and the delay settings that I had to change were recorded. Very difficult. In the end, you are quite satisfied with how you set everything up and how everything works fine, and there are practically no flaws, except for the solo in "Comfortably Numb", where you can say to yourself: "Spit, and play as it is." Having said that, I must say that I am rather strict about form.

I love the melody, I'm a big fan of the "Beatles", and almost all the music that I like, the blues, for example, is played in compliance with the form. Absolutely free form I do not like, as, however, and too tough.

Guitar World: While the early Pink Floyd albums were conceptual, The Wall (1979) was the first with a solid design. What do you think about it?

Gilmour: I liked the storyline invented by Roger. Although I do not fully agree with her, I had to give him my vision. I had a different view of our relationship with the audience than Roger. He did not feel connected to the audience in front of him. I had a different point of view, it has not changed even now. I think that "The Wall" today sounds more vicious than it sounded then. It looks like a list of people Roger curses for his failures in life, like "you ruined me, you did it ..."

Guitar World: How about your solo in "Comfortably Numb"? How long have you been inventing it?

Gilmour: No. I just came to the studio and recorded five or six different solos, and then I acted according to my usual pattern: I listened to each solo and marked myself which parts went well. In other words, I made a table for myself, placing ticks and crosses on different parts, putting two ticks, if it worked out very well, one if it was just good, and a cross, if it was bad. Then, following the table, I raise one regulator on the remote, then another, moving from phrase to phrase and trying to get a really beautiful solo.

Guitar World: How would you define your attitude to the guitar?

Gilmour: Guitar is an instrument, playing on which I can express all my feelings best. I do not play very fast, but I do not need it. This is similar to the way John Lee Hooker plays. Between the lines of vocals, he just hits the first string, and one note says it all.

Kiss new release details

Attached Image

According to Gene Simmons, “Monster” is one of the best works of Kiss.
The album will not be anything extra, "no symphony orchestras, choirs." The producer of the LP was made by Paul Stanley.
“I do not have the patience and not the temperament to stay in the studio for three months. Too much is happening on the street, and who else can you trust, if not Paul? He is a very good team player and is not afraid to say “Yes, maybe I’m wrong? Let's try it "or" Let's try it, "said Simmons magazine.

It is noteworthy that some songs for “Monster” were written for a long time. Thus, the composition "Eat Your Heart Out" was written by Simmons back in the 70s of the last century. While working on the record, he made several significant changes in the track, this version will be included in the album tracklist.

After the release of "Monster" Kiss plan to go on a world tour in support of the album. Now the group is on a joint tour of US cities with Motley Crue. Then Kiss will go on a traditional Kiss cruise, and only then go on tour around the world. The team plans to perform in Africa, Asia and Europe.

In addition, the release of the 1976 album re-release will take place on August 21Destroyer". The release will include an alternate version of the song “Sweet Pain” with various guitar solos.
