General description.

Bittorrent is a highly efficient system for the rapid distribution of data (especially large) via the Internet. Bittorrent can do a lot: file hashing, splitting data into parts, multi-stream data transfer in both directions, complete error correction, and this is just an incomplete list of the benefits of bittorrent. Having ADSL or DSL really download one movie with a capacity of 700mv in 2-3 hours.
Fast, convenient, free and compact torrent client. The uTorrent client, today, is one of the most functional solutions for working with the BitTorrent network (P2P). The program combines optimal functionality with a small size. It supports work regardless of the tracker, allows you to download multiple files at once, has a custom bandwidth, quick recovery of interrupted downloads and much more. A distinctive feature of the BitTorrent network is the very high speed of downloading the file, which is achieved due to the original way of file delivery from several computers at once, even when the entire file is not yet on them. Moreover, files of a very large size are distributed through this network: movies, games, CD and DVD disc images, etc.
uTorrent was originally conceived as a productive client, minimal in terms of both size and features. The developer ВµTorrent Ludvig Strigeus started writing a client in the fall of 2004, then abandoned the project for about a year and resumed work in September 2005. The first available version appeared on September 18, 2005.

Rep: (2116)
What is a torrent file?

A file with the extension .torrent (or .tor) with data that was created for use by the Bit Torrent client. It contains the data necessary for downloading or sharing the file (s) you need. This is NOT a weird audio or video format (like xvid, divx, etc.), for which you need special codecs. This is not some kind of strange compression format or CD image (like rar, tar, ISO, bin, etc.), for the disclosure of which you need a certain program. A torrent file can be made by anyone and uploaded to the tracker. After other interested persons download this file for themselves - they already "know" where to get the files from which the torrent was created. Once again, a torrent is a shortcut that uniquely identifies the contents of the transmitted information and the address where you can get this information.

Rep: (2116)
Where to get uTorrent?

On the official site

Russification uTorrent

It is possible to Russify the client, for this we go back to the Download section of the official site and download the Russification file
Now the translation file can be placed in the folder where you moved utorrent.exe and restart the client if it is already loaded. After the reboot, the client will be Russified, but if this does not happen, then go to Options - Preferences - General and select Russian in the Language item and restart the client.
Attached Image

Or: Help -> Download Translation
The program will reboot and will already be in Russian.

UTorrent setting

1. General
We expose everything as in the screenshot. Setup General is ready. In most cases, it is not necessary to change these settings.
Attached Image

2. Display
You can leave everything by default.
Attached Image

3. Folders
We look at the screenshot and customize the folder to download (the names for the folders you can set your own).
Attached Image

Place downloadable files in - serves to indicate the storage location of not yet downloaded, temporary files.
Move completed files to - this is the location for already uploaded files.

4. Connection
Attached Image

UPnP forwarding and NAT-PMP forwarding must be left if you use a router and it supports UPnP technology.
Random port at startup - every time the client starts, the port number will be generated (changed) automatically. If you use a router, then it is better not to enable this function, because every time you have to forward the ports of a given one.
In firewall exceptions - leave if you use the standard Windows firewall, because if this is not done, then every time you start the client, an error will occur in the log: Error opening Windows firewall: 0x80070005 Access is denied

5. Speed
Attached Image

Important:
In this section, the settings depend on your connection (receive and return) that your provider provides.
Settings are made in kilobytes, and the provider indicates their tariffs in kilobits (1 kilobyte = 8 kilobits), so in order to properly configure the connection, you need to divide your speed (reception and return) by 8. For example, in the screenshot, the connection is set at 2560 / 512 (2560 - load / receive, i.e. speed to you; 512 - recoil, i.e. speed from you).
2560/8 = 320
512/8 = 64
3) It is better not to exhibit the maximum possible speed of return and reception, since this may adversely affect both the download and the content return. Optimally set 80% of the maximum speed of your channel. As in my example (see screenshot and point 2)
320*0.8 = 256
64 * 0.8 = 51.2 (I set 52, because you can enter only a number in the field)
The maximum number of connections - usually 800-1500 is enough
The maximum number of attached peers per torrent - just put in the area of 80-150
The number of slots for distribution to the torrent - can be set in the region of 80-150

6. BitTorrent
Attached Image

Enable DHT and DHT network for new torrents - allows the client to find the distribution sources and those who want to download outside the tracker. If your channel speed / tariff is divided by zones (local network is faster, the world is slower, etc.), it is better to disable it. See also
Search local peers - allows you to find those who want to download or give away on your provider's local network. Before you turn on it is better to consult on the forum of your provider, because you can get a ban for the so-called flood traffic.
Scrape-requests to the tracker is needed so that the client additionally polls the tracker for the exact number of seeders and peers in the distribution. Our tracker supports this feature, so you can enable it.
Exchange between peers - allows you to find other participants in the exchange without directly polling the tracker.
Speed limit of local peers - by default, utorrent believes that the provider provides a higher speed to the local network than external, and general restrictions on downloading and uploading should not apply to local peers. If you agree with this - remove the check mark. But then local peers can clog your channel completely, and you may have problems with providers, i.e. flood traffic.
To avoid accusations of cheating and rating, we strongly recommend disabling the DHT and Exchange Between Peers functions.

7. Sequence
Attached Image

You can still do everything by default, but I set Distribute to coefficient -1, which means that at any ratio given / accepted on any of the tasks, the client will not automatically stop it. Distribution time 0 - means to distribute infinitely.

8. Optional
Attached Image

We set the following parameters:
bt.allow_same_ip- true
Allows multiple inbound connections from a single IP address
bt.graceful_shutdown- true
When enabled (true), the client, when completing its work, will try to send statistics to the tracker until it goes all for each torrent, otherwise, only one attempt will be made without any checks. At the same time, the client will not be visually displayed on the screen, but it will hang in the memory. The time to complete the program depends on the quality of your connection to the tracker, on the workload of the tracker itself and on the number of active torrents in the client. Better turn on.
ipfilter.enable- false
Disables the blocking of IP addresses if they are specified in the ipfilter.dat file
net.max_halfopen
Set 80% of the number in the patch that was flashedtcpip.sys

9. Caching
Attached Image

We expose as in the screenshot.

Settings Files

By default, uTorrent stores its settings files in a separate folder in the user’s profile, to open it, selectStart>Runinsert% appdata% \ utorrentand pressOK.

The main files in this folder:
  • settings.datwith settings
  • resume.datwith job information
  • .old files- constantly updated backups. If your computer suddenly turned off and all tasks disappeared from the client, try replacing the resume.dat file with the resume.dat.old file
  • torrent job files(unless otherwise specified in the settings)

If at startup utorrent.exe detectssettings.datin the same folder (next to utorrent.exe), then uses this folder for all its settings files. This can be used for:
  • simplifying uTorrent migration when reinstalling Window
  • use multiple copies of uTorrent with independent settings (you can even run them simultaneously)

Rep: (2116)
Buttons

Hold the mouse cursor over the button to see a tooltip.

Add Torrent [Add Torrent]:open a torrent file from disk. Usually not used - it is easier to make uTorrent the default application for .torrent files so that they open automatically in the client. Or just drop the torrent files onto the client window.
Add torrent from URL [Add Torrent from URL]:Take and open the torrent file from the specified web address. Can be used only with trackers that do not require registration.
Create a new torrent [Create New Torrent]:create a torrent file for your file or file folder on the disk.
Remove [Remove]:delete the task. In this case, by default, both the torrent file and the distribution file (s) remain on the disk. You will have more choice if you right-click on the task or on the “Delete” button itself. Moreover, in the latter case, you can additionally check the “delete to basket” checkbox, and also select the default action for the “Delete” button by holding Shift.
Start [Start]:Run the task or, depending on the settings, put in a queue.
Pause [Pause]:Pause the task.
In pause mode, the client stops file sharing with new pieces of the file, but continues to keep connections already established with other peers, and allows the already started pieces to complete (therefore, the speed drops to zero not instantly, although quite quickly). It can be used for short-term release of the channel for other tasks or applications.

It is not necessary to leave a task for a long time on a pause - so you should not take up the resources of other peers, and you appear on the tracker as a normal participant, although you are not actually participating in the distribution.
Stop [Stop]:Stop the task.
RSS [RSS Downloader]:bootloader RSS settings window. If your tracker has an RSS feed of distributions, then you can configure the client to automatically find and download new distributions according to certain criteria (for example, all series of a single series).
Settings [Preferences]:uTorrent settings window, you can also call by Ctrl-P

Rep: (2116)
Context menu

Click on the task with the right mouse button and the context menu will appear. Some of his points are:

Force Start:Click on the task with the right mouse button and select "Forced Start". The task will start in a special mode, ignoring the Queue settings.
forced task:
  • starts immediately, ignoring the queue
  • not counted as an active task in the sequence constraints
  • does not stop in terms of seating
  • and besides, does not stop in the “Off” mode in the Schedule

The letter [F] is added to the “Status” column of the forced task.
To transfer the job to normal mode, simply click "Start".

Bandwidth Allocation:high / low priority on the speed of return, works only with a global limit on return

Recheck [Force Re-Check]:recalculate and check the checksums of all available distribution pieces

Update tracker [Update Tracker]:turn to the tracker right now, without waiting for the next periodic appeal

Space reservation

By default, when downloading, uTorrent immediately reserves 100% of the size of each downloaded file as needed, i.e. when gets the first pieces of this file.
You can tick the “Reserve a place immediately” checkbox in the download settings, and then uT will reserve a seat immediately at the start of the task. Those. he will do exactly the same thing, but a few minutes earlier. It makes sense to use this option if you want to immediately make sure that you have enough disk space for downloading the entire distribution.
You can also make uTorrent not reserve 100% of the file size, but increase the file size gradually. However, this setting is not recommended because it greatly increases disk fragmentation.
First make sure that the option “Reserve a place at once” is disabled (English “Pre-allocate all files”), and then turn on one of the following options in the Advanced section:
  • bt.compact_allocation - this feature often does not work, the usual symptom is the error "Error: Element not found"
  • diskio.sparse_files - requires NTFS disk

Rep: (2116)
Fine tuning

Settings -> Configuration -> Advanced
Here are the settings that are recommended to be changed only if you need it and you know well what you are doing. Settings whose values are already changed from the initial ones, the client is highlighted with an asterisk *

  • gui.compat_diropen- use another dialog box to select folders on the disk; for those who have problems with the default dialog box
  • net.bind_ip- if you have several network adapters in the system, indicate here the IP address of the adapter that uTorrent should use for incoming connections
  • net.outgoing_ip- if you have several network adapters in your system, then specify here the IP address of the adapter that uTorrent should use for outgoing connections
  • net.outgoing_port- forces uTorrent to use only this port for outgoing connections (usually this port is selected randomly for each connection). Only for Windows 2000 and higher. Sometimes the setting may not work correctly. This setting should only be used in exceptional cases. It can be used to reduce the number of NAT translations and thus prevent some router models from freezing. It can be used to solve the NAT problem of incoming connections in some types of NAT
  • net.low_cpu- slightly reduces CPU usage. With a very fast download, the inclusion of this option may slightly increase the speed.
  • net.max_halfopen- how many half-open connections uTorrent can have at the same time. This value should not be higher than 8 on unpatched Windows XP SP2.
  • net.wsaevents- if you have strange problems with the firewall, you can try to tweak this setting - reduce the value by one and see if there will be a difference
  • ipfilter.enable- allow the use of ipfilter.dat IP address blocking file
  • dht.rate- controls how much traffic DHT can use. -1 means automatic adjustment: your maximum upload speed / 16, but not less than 512 and not more than 8192 bytes / s
  • rss.update_interval- RSS update interval. Will ignore values less than 5
  • gui.update_rate- interval for updating the program interface in milliseconds, at least 500ms
  • gui.delete_to_trash- move deleted files to the trash. The option can also be activated if you right-click on the delete job button and select "Move to trash if possible"
  • gui.default_del_action- sets the default delete job mode. It is better to change this setting like this: right-click on the delete job button, hold shift to select the default mode
  • gui.bypass_search_redirect- when using the search field in the uTorrent window, go directly to search sites, thus not showing ads from search.utorrent.com
  • queue.dont_count_slow_dl / ul- when calculating "active" tasks, do not take into account tasks with download or upload speeds less than 1kbyte / s, see. Sequence
  • queue.prio_no_seeds- when sitting, give priority to tasks, on the distribution of which there are no other seeders
  • bt.scrape_stopped- allow scrape for completely stopped tasks
  • bt.compact_allocation- when downloading create files on a disk as in the Python language in order to save space. Cannot be used in conjunction with the “partfile” option. This feature may not work correctly if you get the message "Element not found", then this is exactly the case
  • bt.enable_tracker- allows built-in tracker with addresshttp: // your_IP: port / announce
  • bt.multiscrape allows multi-scrape- sending infohash several torrents at once in one scrape request. There is no need to change this option, since uTorrent automatically determines when the tracker does not support multi-scrape
  • bt.send_have_to_seed- allows sending "have" messages (that you have a new piece) to the sidam
  • bt.set_sockbuf- debug option for autodetecting TCP buffer size (so_sndbuf) and adjusting it depending on your upload speed. It does not regulate it based on latency.
  • bt.connect_speed- controls the number of connections per second that uTorrent installs
  • bt.prio_first_last_piece- try first to download the first and last piece of each file
  • bt.allow_same_ip- allow multiple connections from the same IP address; by default, this is not allowed as protection against dishonest leechers
  • bt.no_connect_to_services- do not establish connections with clients that use listening ports 25 or 110. Turn on if your antivirus is unhappy and you do not want to turn off the auto-checking of mail in it
  • peer.lazy_bitfield- communicate with other customers a little differently, sometimes helps against some Internet providers that specifically prevent seeding
  • peer.resolve_country- use DNSBL service to display flags of countries in the list of peers. Cannot be used simultaneously with the flags.conf file
  • peer.disconnect_inactive- disconnect from inactive peers after a certain period of time (300 seconds by default). However, the client will not be disabled if the total number of peers in the swarm is less than the maximum number of connections per task
  • peer.disconnect_inactive_interval- time interval in seconds for the previous option, values less than 300 are ignored
  • diskio.flush_files- close file handles every minute. This behavior can sometimes have the observed effect of incorrect behavior of the Windows system cache, as a result of which memory leaks occur.
  • diskio.sparse_files- reserve space for files exactly as long as necessary, works only on an NTFS disk, increases fragmentation
  • diskio.use_partfile- use the “partfile” to store pieces of data that belong in part to the files that you chose “Do not Download”. This is the default behavior, and if you set this option to false, then uTorrent will have to create some “Do not download” files on disk.
  • diskio.smart_hash- calculate the checksum of the data directly in memory, instead of writing data to disk, read it, and then calculate the checksum. Should reduce the number of disk reads.
  • diskio.coalesce_writes- Try to minimize the number of calls to WriteFile. May help achieve a slightly smaller number of writes to disk, but due to the use of additional memory and processor resources

Rep: (2116)
Why can't I download faster?

There may be several reasons for this. It is possible that at the moment only a few other people have logged in and are sharing this file, so you cannot get their high throughput from them. Perhaps this is a new file, and only a few people sit it. Perhaps the tracker is really loaded or has been subjected to DOS attacks. Perhaps the speed of your upload is limited by you or your provider (for example, dial-up, some types of cable and DSL connections), or you may have limited the speed of your download using one of the experimental clients. This program forces you to share, and the faster you share (upload), the faster you can download. This principle underlies the program. Thus, if you do not download (or cannot download) very quickly, do not expect to get really huge download speeds until a large number of people start to share, and only a small number download.

Rep: (2116)
Download did not go, reportedly something like an error when connecting to the tracker. What's the matter?

This means that at the moment you cannot receive this file. This may be an old link to a file that no one else shares. Perhaps the tracker is overloaded and at the moment does not allow new connections. The site on which the file was posted may be offline, and this most likely means that the tracker has also crashed. Either leave it open and hope that everything improves in the end, or try returning to it later.

Rep: (2116)
I downloaded perfectly, but the download reached xx% and stopped. Why?

As in the previous question, most likely, no one else shares the part that you need. How is this possible? Let's say the old file was shared by one person who had the whole file, and three people are trying to get the file from him. If the first one is offline, the other three will continue to share the file with each other. However, there may be several parts that none of the trinity have. Ultimately, all three will reach a certain completeness of the downloaded file and stop downloading after no one has the missing parts to download. If this happens, we can try to leave it open and wait until someone who has the missing parts comes in contact.

Rep: (2116)
Who is the cider (seeder), who is the leecher?

Seeder- a friend who has a file already downloaded and ready for distribution on the disk. He can be the initiator of the distribution of the file.Leecher- almost comrade sider, the one who is currently involved in the system and downloads pieces of the file while simultaneously distributing the downloaded pieces to other personalities. Seeders do not need them by themselves. As the current lecher downloaded the file, it becomes a sider. Downloading not all the content, you can stay licher "for life".

Rep: (2116)
What are trackers?

Tracker- This is the site, or rather the engine on the site, which
a) stores torrents and distributes them to all clients in order to download files from each other
b) sends them information about the siders and personalities that distribute the torrent, that is, is a link between them.

Rep: (2116)
What is the Ratio (ratio)?

Ratio (ratio)- This is roughly the ratio of the information you downloaded and transmitted. If you want to download information from others - please participate in its dissemination. Actually, you personally do not need to do anything for this - just do not turn off your BT client at all - it hangs in the tray and does not interfere. And thus, you help others download the file from you, as others help you download it from them. Keep in mind if you will only download - the administrator of the tracker may prohibit you from using its resource. Freeloaders do not like anywhere else.

Rep: (2116)
What is superside?

Super Seeding- A special distribution mode in the BitTorrent network, trying to minimize the amount of data that the distributor will give out before the first download.

How it works?
The client in super-view mode looks like an ordinary feast without data for the rest.
When connecting to another feast, the client informs him that he has a new unique piece of data and allows this piece to be downloaded.
The client will not give the feast more pieces until he sees the previous given piece from one of the other feasts.
Efficiency is usually evaluated by the volume given away by the distributor before the first download. Since the distributor tries not to give the same piece twice, ideally this volume should be slightly larger than the volume of the distribution itself. For example, 110% is considered a good result.
Usually, with a superseed, the time to the appearance of the first one downloaded also is minimized, but not necessarily. In addition, it is quite possible that the appearance of, for example, the first 20 downloads will be faster without a super-sid.

When to enable super-sit mode?

SuperSide makes sense if:
  • you pay for outgoing traffic (in this case, the super-sit is simply irreplaceable)
  • you have a big distribution and a relatively weak channel
  • you want to distribute as quickly as possible and, if possible, disconnect at the first download

On the other hand, if you intend to remain in the distribution for a long time (for example, to raise the rating), and you are more interested in a stable speed of return, then it is better not to include the super-seat.
A distributor’s recoil speed during a super-seat can jump (often drop below the maximum possible). Usually this happens with a small number of feasts. Therefore, some distributors prefer to start distribution in the normal mode, and after waiting for 10 or more downloaders (and at least several of them with available ports), include a super-view.

Necessary conditions for distribution in the superseed:
  • you are the only seed
  • you have a port open for incoming connections (to get the correct picture about the distribution of pieces to the distributor, it is advisable to be connected to all peers)

Thus, the main thing you need to know about super-sid is that ordinary users do not need to include it in the client. And even the distributors (uploaders) should use it only if they understand well when and why.
One more remark. If you already have a copy of the distribution files, and the distributor is the only seed on the distribution, then before connecting to the distribution with the second seed, it is better to first ask the distributor (indicating your speed of return). Perhaps the distributor uses the superseed, and your connection to him will violate the superseed mode and only harm.

uTorrent loads the operating system too much

In the client's settings, select the "Advanced" item, in it the subitem "Caching" and set the checkboxes "Disable Windows caching when writing to disk" and "Disable Windows caching when reading from disk".

also need to tick the box. Distribute all files.
Attached Image
The effect only works when the (true) option is on.diskio.no_zero in "Settings - Advanced"
