1.What version of androida want to run (2.1,2.2)?
2. Have you tried to flash the system.img image from your sources into your device?
3.What smartphone model specifically?
4. Tried to compare the files in the source code laid out by the manufacturer for your model and AOSP?

I remember that in the downloaded source code VENDOR was not at all, it should be created there.
