Official firmware is available to NookColor users in two ways: manual installation, installation via the Internet via WiFi

To find out the current firmware version of a device, go to Settings / Device Info / About your NookColor

Install official firmware
  1. Download the update (Sideload_update.zip) to your computer (do not change the file name and extension )
  2. Make sure the device’s chargenot less than 20% (Settings / Device Info)
  3. Connect the device to the computer with a USB cable. A new removable disk should appear in the "My Computer" window
  4. Copy the update file to the device disk in the root directory (Do not unpack the contents; do not create additional folders )
  5. After copying, disconnect the drive through the "Safely Remove Hardware" (tray)
  6. NookColor will automatically recognize the update on its disk after a few minutes or when it tries to switch to sleep mode. The device will offer to install a new update.
  7. Do not turn off NookColor during the update installation process.
  8. Once the update is completed, the device will automatically reboot
  9. After the reboot, the green letter "n" appears in the lower left corner of the status bar. Click on it - the update is complete.

Getting root on the device using Auto-Nooter.
Translation instructions from xda-developers.

Do not use with firmware1.0.0 ! For firmware only 1.0.1

What gives Auto-Nooter:
  • Installs:
    su and Superuser.apk
    Busybox
    Softkeys 3.0.0
NookColor Tools (for installing programs not from the market)
    Calendar and Calculator.
    Android Market, Gmail, Youtube
  • Includes
    Multi-touch
    Includes live wallpaper
    Installs Android Market and Gmail.
  • Auto-install programs (put .apk in / data / app) -not verified

Attention, requirements for installation.
[list = 1]
[*] Nook Color must be registered
[*] You need a working account on Gmail / Youtube. If you used this account to register, then useonly him.
[*] Software needed to record an image.
dd (for Linux) or WinImage (for Windows)
[*] Card reader for microSD card.Do not use NookColor!
[*] A working Wi-FI network

[/ list]

Procedure.
  1. Download Auto-Nooter
  2. Act
Linux. Unzip and use the dd if = auto-nooter-2-12-25.img of = / dev / sdcard command
Windows Unzip and write the image to the card. (select "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image" in WinImage).Attention, all data on the card will be erased!
  3. Disconnect NookColor from the computer (if it was connected).
  4. Insert the card into the device.
  5. Connect the device to the computer with a cable. (I did it with the device turned off)
  6. The screen will be black. When the device reboots, then the installation is complete.
  7. Remove the card from the device.
  8. Select Skip on Android Welcome Screen
  9. Turn on Wi-Fi and go to Youtube (in Extras)
  10. Press Menu, select My Channel and log in using your Google account (I had a message about network problems, do not pay attention).
  11. Exit Youtube and sign in to Gmail (in Extras).
  12. Sync mail. If synchronization doesn't work, that's okay
  13. Launch the Market.

To check, download and install the application from the Market. If everything is in order, then the firmware was successful.

Download AutoNooter 2.12.25: Attached fileauto_nooter_2.12.25.img.zip (63.78 MB)

Tell me please!
I have official firmware 1.0.0
if I upgrade to 1.0.1, what will it improve?
And does it make sense to upgrade to unofficial firmware and what do they give?
thank you in advance!

Judging by the official page, the difference between 1.0.0 and 1.0.1
NOOKcolor V1.0.1 improves Wi-Fi connectivity and the browser experience.

What does improving the quality of the WiFi connection and browser work mean?

As for unofficial firmware, then you need to understand what you want from them. Most things can only be done by getting the root (the root will not enable the "magic" functions, but only make it possible to use them).
Going through the sectionhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=864
You can find a guide to increase battery life by removing the service responsible for the dialer, you can try to make NookColor friends with ad-hoc wifi networks, install Android 2.2 (which, although not without glitches, it works) or overclock the processor. Naturally, all such "games" are at your own peril and risk.

I’ll add that at any time you can return to the official firmware.

He personally did this in the process of fussing with the device.

Please tell me what the following will give me:
Installs:
su and Superuser.apk
Busybox
Softkeys 3.0.0

Includes
Multi-touch
Includes live wallpaper

The description goes that use a card reader for a microSD card. Do not use NookColor !, but then the whole description happens with the device ...
or am I not understanding something ??

Rep: (24)
Root access and the "Menu" and "Back" buttons will appear.
Multi-touch - you can enlarge the browser page, for example, by touching from the screen and spreading your fingers apart. Still works when viewing photos and pdf.
Live wallpapers - as a wallpaper you can put on the screen not only a static picture, but also a moving one :)

This means that you need to use a card reader to write the image to the card.
After recording, the whole procedure is carried out with a hand.

that you need to use a card reader to write the image to the card.

thank you very much for the answer!
That is, it turns out that then this card is not needed ??? or will it still be needed?

Rep: (24)
Chereda

It will be needed only for firmware. then it can be formatted and used in the device as a regular memory card

How to enable the installation of third-party programs?

Rep: (0)
Good day! Reflashed. Fulfilled the root. After the root I enter the Market. When you try to download the application, a message appears:

This application has access to the following:
Network communication
full internet access

Sistem tools
prevent NOOKcolor from sleeping

Otherwise, it seems like everything works ... What have I done wrong?

Rep: (24)
mentor69,

and after that it turns out to allow downloading?

Posted on 1/18/2011, 14:41:

pal-1,

In NookColor Tools, uncheck, then tick off Allow Non-Market Apps

Rep: (5)
Mike_P - ATP figured out.
And to include the Russian keyboard there where he writes to throw, the system does not allow to throw a file.

And how to activate bluetooth on the site did not quite understand how.

Rep: (24)
pal-1,

First you need to install Root Explorer.
With it, go to the / system / app folder, click the "Mount R / W" button at the top, and the folder is writable.
After that, you can install any keyboard by rewriting the file with it into this folder.

Bluetooth did not even try to turn it on, judging by the forums, it does not work very stably, but I don’t see the need for it :)

"Uncheck in NookColor Tools, then check the Allow Non-Market Apps"
But how to do it? I don’t understand how. In addition, how to install programs downloaded from an Internet? Tell pls algorithm ..

Rep: (5)
mentor69- You have installed the market.
Then, in the extras tab, the NookColor Tools application should appear.
There, in the main window, a checkmark is opposite Allow Non-Market Apps.
Remove it, reboot, put it again and reboot again.
Then put any file manager through the market.
Next, throw through the apk computer to the device.
Run through the manager.
Waiting for it to install.
Everything...
