Having collected and analyzed information on various GPS-devices, as well as frequently asked questions and problems discussed in various branches of this Forum on different devices, I would like tobrieflyin an accessible form to make the "identikit" of the most demanded device.
We will deliberately not touch the multimedia systems with GPS-navigation, or the built-in GPS-systems, and consider only the "boxes" on WinCE, the most common in the markets in the form ofGps navigatorsdifferent brands.
Perhaps, after reading these lines, it will be easier for you to choose the necessary device, and will allow you to avoid many unpleasant moments, including and some frustration, with the subsequent operation.

So, at what points you should pay attention to the purchase, so as not to try to circumvent in the future from various clever and not so ways:

1. OS version.
At the time of this writing, the most common versions of the operating system are: 4.20 and 5.0. Navigators on WinCE 6.0 also began to appear, thanks to which we can superficially evaluate this line of devices.
It seems to me that while here the advantage can be given to devices on 5.0. And first of all because of the compatibility problems of the currently available software (nav. Programs, utilities, games, etc., additional software). It is possible that the future is with devices at 6.0, and over time, many different software will appear and under it ...
But for now the fact remains. I want to immediately warn you that navigators are not a PC at all, and you will not be able to reinstall the operating system to a later version.

2. The availability of free access of the original (factory) firmware or artisanal, but proven. Popularity device.
It’s no secret that devices can fail for various reasons ... And it’s also no secret that they can either simply refuse to repair or request an inadequate price in the SC.

7. COM port.
All applications communicate with the GPS-receiver through the COM ports, which can be several. The port speed is not important - it will not affect the confidence of receiving signals from the satellite.
But it is not a secret that sometimes we use warez (hacked) programs, where, possibly, there is no possibility to select (configure) the necessary COM port from the nav. programs. In this case, it is better to make sure that the system default isCOM1 was "responsible" for the GPS.

8. USB connection
