Hold Shift, right-click on the file - "Open with ...", select the program, put the checkbox "Always use this program ..." and "OK" - now all files of this type will be opened using the selected program. :) "Just opened" is, apparently, the program "Windows Photo Album". In Vista, this is done through the Control Panel - "programs by default."

In any case, right-click on the desired file (its extension is important, say, jpg) and click Properties (properties) in the opened menu. On the first tab there is a button with which you select with which program this file will open in the future. Voila !!
And I'm used to it. Without changing associations with regular programs, I pull out a link to Irfan View, with which I usually watch and quickly edit pictures. If you drag a graphic file to this icon on the desktop, the file opens in Irfan View, regardless of the associated program.
