The driver is needed not for the keyboard, but for hot keys (fn + Fx) and for the backlight of the keyboard. Basic functionality will work without a driver.

Either pick it up through reflection (not very good, IMHO, but you get guaranteed the value in this variable), or sign the receiver on BluetoothHeadset.ACTION_VENDOR_SPECIFIC_HEADSET_EVENT and process it in your copy of the updateBlueBattery method (Intent intent)
